Abstract

A volar fixation system includes a plate intended to be positioned against the volar side of the radial bone. The plate includes holes having a predefined axis along which fasteners can be received and locked relative to the plate. A guide is provided that seats on the plate to guide a drill in axial alignment with the holes in plate.

Claims (26)

1. A fracture fixation system for use on a bone, comprising:

a) a bone plate for placement on the bone and including a head portion and a body portion angled relative to said head portion,

said head portion having a bone contacting first surface and an opposite second surface and defining a plurality of threaded fastener holes, each of the plurality of threaded fastener holes defining a pre-angled fixed orientation fastener hole longitudinal axis extending between the first and second surfaces, wherein at least two of the longitudinal axes of the threaded fastener holes are oblique relative to each other, and

said body portion including a plurality of screw holes; and

b) a guide plate having a substantial portion thereof positionable in contact with and on top of said bone plate such that the bone plate is positioned between the bone and the guide plate, said portion of said guide plate in contact with said bone plate having guide holes disposed therein, wherein each guide hole has a longitudinal axis coincident with a corresponding one of the fastener hole longitudinal axes, and, upon alignment of the guide plate and bone plate, a plurality of guide holes and the corresponding fastener holes cooperate to define a guide path for drilling into the bone.

2. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , further comprising a mating structure to stabilize said guide plate relative to said bone plate.

3. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein said plurality of threaded fastener holes comprises 3 threaded fastener holes that are laterally displaced and substantially in a row.

4. A fracture fixation system according to claim 3 , wherein successive lateral threaded fastener holes are situated distally relative to medially adjacent threaded fastener holes.

5. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein at least two of said longitudinal axes are oblique in two dimensions relative to each other.

6. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein at least three of said longitudinal axes are oblique in two dimensions relative to each other.

7. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein four of said longitudinal axes are oblique in two dimensions relative to each other.

8. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein said bone plate is dimensioned for the distal volar radius.

9. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one fastener having a head portion and a shaft portion, said head portion adapted to be mechanically engaged in one of said plurality of fastener holes of said head portion, and a shaft portion sized to be received through said fastener hole and extend along said longitudinal axis of said fastener hole.

10. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one screw adapted to be received in said at least one screw hole.

11. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein said head portion and said body portion are provided in a substantially T-shaped configuration relative to each other, with said body portion intersecting said head portion.

12. A fracture fixation system according to claim 1 , wherein said plurality of threaded fastener holes are internally threaded holes.

13. A fracture fixation system for use on a bone, comprising:

a) a bone plate for placement on the bone and including a head portion and a body portion angled relative to said head portion,

said head portion having a bone contacting first surface and an opposite second surface and defining a plurality of threaded fastener holes, each of the plurality of threaded fastener holes defining a pre-angled fixed orientation longitudinal axis, wherein at least two of the longitudinal axes of the threaded fastener holes are oblique relative to each other, and

said body portion including a plurality of screw holes; and

b) a guide plate positionable on said bone plate such that a substantial portion of the bone plate is positioned between the bone and the guide plate, said guide plate having guide holes, wherein each guide hole has a longitudinal axis coincident with a corresponding one of the plurality of fastener holes, and wherein, when each guide hole is aligned with said corresponding one of said threaded fastener holes, at least one guide hole and the corresponding threaded fastener hole cooperate to define a guide path for drilling into the bone.

14. A fracture fixation system according to claim 13 , further comprising a mating structure to stabilize said guide plate relative to said bone plate.

15. A fracture fixation system according to claim 13 , wherein at least three of said longitudinal axes are oblique in two dimensions relative to each other.

16. A fracture fixation system according to claim 13 , wherein said bone plate is dimensioned for the distal volar radius.

17. A fracture fixation system according to claim 13 , further comprising at least one fastener having a head portion and a shaft portion, said head portion adapted to be mechanically engaged in one of said plurality of threaded fastener holes of said head portion, and a shaft portion sized to be received through said threaded fastener hole and extend along said longitudinal axis of said threaded fastener hole.

18. A fracture fixation system according to claim 13 , wherein said plurality of threaded fastener holes are internally threaded holes.
