Abstract

In an embodiment, a method is provided for accessing a file node. In this method, a file access request specifying a file node to be accessed by way of a file system is received at a server from a client device. A counter is referenced to identify that the file node is being accessed in response to a different file access request. The counter is configured to track whether the file node is being accessed. The file node is provided to the client device when the counter indicates a termination of access to the file node resulting from the different file access request.

Claims (51)

1. A method of providing access to a file, the method comprising:

receiving, from a client computing device, an access request for the file;

tracking, with a second computing device, an access status for the file from an unavailable status when the access request is received to an available status when the file becomes available, wherein the second computing device comprises one or more processors and a memory in communication with the one or more processors; and

in response to identifying the available status for the file, providing access to the file to the client computing device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unavailable status indicates that the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, and the available status indicates a termination of access corresponding to the different access request.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the access request is a request to read the file, and providing access to the file includes providing a copy of the file to the client computing device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the access request is a request to modify the file, and providing access to the file includes providing access to the client computing device to modify the file.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to identifying the access status as the unavailable status, waiting a predetermined amount of time; and

after waiting the predetermined amount of time, identifying the access status to determine if the access status has changed.

The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, the unavailable status indicating that the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, and the available status indicating a termination of access corresponding to the different access request.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking the access status includes:

referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed;

in response to identifying that the counter indicates the tile is being accessed in response to a different access request, waiting a predetermined amount of time; and

after waiting the predetermined amount of time, referencing the counter to determine whether the file is being accessed in response to the different access request.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, and in response to identifying the available status for the file the method further comprises:

adjusting the counter to indicate that access to the file is being provided to the client computing device;

providing access to the file to the client computing device by providing a copy of the file to the client computing device; and

adjusting the counter to indicate that the access to the file by the client computing device has been terminated.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, and in response to identifying the available status for the file the method further comprises:

adjusting the counter to indicate that access to the file is being provided to the client computing device;

providing access to the file to the client computing device by enabling the client computing device to modify the file; and

adjusting the counter to indicate that the access to the file by the client computing device has been terminated after the file has been modified by the client computing device.

10. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations, comprising:

receiving, from a client computing device, an access request for a file;

tracking an access status for the file from an unavailable status when the access request is received to an available status when the file becomes available; and

in response to identifying the available status for the file, providing access to the file to the client computing device.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the unavailable status indicates that the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, and the available status indicates a termination of access corresponding to the different access request.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the access request is a request to read the file, and providing access to the file includes providing a copy of the file to the client computing device.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the access request is a request to modify the file, and providing access to the file includes providing access to the client computing device to modify the file.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

in response to identifying the access status as the unavailable status, waiting a predetermined amount of time; and

after waiting the predetermined amount of time, identifying the access status to determine if the access status has changed.

15. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, the unavailable status indicating that the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, and the available status indicating a termination of access corresponding to the different access request.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein tracking the access status includes:

referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed;

in response to identifying that the counter indicates the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, waiting a predetermined amount of time; and

after waiting the predetermined amount of time, referencing the counter to determine whether the file is being accessed in response to the different access request.

The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, and in response to identifying the available status for the file the instructions further cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

adjusting the counter to indicate that access to the file is being provided to the client computing device;

providing access to the file to the client computing device by providing a copy of the file to the client computing device; and

adjusting the counter to indicate that the access to the file by the client computing device has been terminated.

The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein tracking the access status includes referencing a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, and in response to identifying the available status for the file the instructions further cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

adjusting the counter to indicate that access to the file is being provided to the client computing device;

providing access to the file to the client computing device by enabling the client computing device to modify the file; and

adjusting the counter to indicate that the access to the file by the client computing device has been terminated after the file has been modified by the client computing device.

19. A system for providing access to a file, comprising:

a hardware-implemented request module configured to receive, from a client computing device, an access request for the file;

a hardware-implemented tracking module configured to track an access status for the file from an unavailable status when the access request is received to an available status when the file becomes available; and

a hardware-implemented access module configured to provide access to the file to the client computing device in response to identifying the available status for the file.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the hardware-implemented tracking module references a counter that is configured to track whether the file is being accessed, the unavailable status indicating that the file is being accessed in response to a different access request, and the available status indicating a termination of access corresponding to the different access request.
