Abstract

Method and apparatus for entrainment containment in digital filters using output phase modulation. Phase change is gradually introduced into the acoustic feedback canceller loop to avoid entrainment of the feedback canceller filter. Various embodiments employing different output phase modulation approaches are set forth and time and frequency domain examples are provided. Additional method and apparatus can be found in the specification and as provided by the attached claims and their equivalents.

1. A method for containing entrainment of a digital filter system, comprising:

converting analog sound signals into a plurality of digital, frequency domain subband signals;

processing a gradually phase shifted version of the digital, frequency domain subband signals to create processed digital, frequency domain signals to reduce entrainment of the digital filter system;

converting the processed digital, frequency domain signals into analog time domain signals; and

generating sound from the analog time domain signals.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising gradually incrementing phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at 4 degree increments per sample.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals comprises gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals from 0 to 360 degrees.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising gradually incrementing phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at about 0.25 to about 25 degree increments per sample.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals comprises gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals from 0 to 360 degrees.

6. The method of claim 4 , comprising gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at 0.25 degree increments per sample.

7. The method of claim 4 , comprising gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at 25 degree increments per sample.

8. The method of claim 4 , comprising increasing phase shift increments to achieve more aggressive entrainment containment.

9. The method of claim 4 , comprising decreasing phase shift increments to reduce artifacts.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising increasing phase shift increments to achieve more aggressive entrainment containment.

11. The method of claim 1 , comprising decreasing phase shift increments to reduce artifacts.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals comprises gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals from 0 to 360 degrees.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the analog sound signals using an acoustic sensor of a hearing assistance device.

14. The method of claim 13 , comprising receiving the analog sound signals using a microphone of a hearing aid, and wherein generating the sound from the analog time domain signals comprises generating the sound using a receiver of the hearing aid.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising gradually incrementing phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at about 0.25 to about 25 degree increments per sample.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals at 4 degree increments per sample.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals comprises gradually incrementing the phase of the digital, frequency domain subband signals from 0 to 360 degrees.
