Remote phosphor light emitting devices having transparent features
View Patent ↗A substrate including phosphor is remotely illuminated by an LED. Optical radiation that emerges through the substrate is measured. Portions of the substrate, such as raised features on the substrate, are then selectively removed responsive to the measuring, so as to obtain a desired optical radiation. In removing portions of the substrate, holes may be drilled through the substrate to provide a separate path for light from the LED that does not pass through the phosphor. Alternatively, a separate LED may be provided outside the dome.
1. A transmissive optical element comprising:
a transparent substrate having luminophoric material thereon and that is configured to be remotely illuminated by a light emitting device that is spaced apart from the transparent substrate;
the transparent substrate further comprising raised transparent features thereon,
wherein the luminophoric material is on a same surface of the transparent substrate as the raised transparent features and wherein the luminophoric material partially covers the raised transparent features but does not completely cover the raised transparent features.
2. A transmissive optical element according to claim 1 wherein the transparent substrate comprises inner and outer surfaces and wherein the raised transparent features comprise transparent bumps and/or lines on the outer surface.
3. A transmissive optical element according to claim 2 wherein the luminophoric material is on the outer surface.
4. A transmissive optical element according to claim 2 wherein at least one of the transparent bumps and/or lines include flat tops.
5. A transmissive optical element according to claim 1 wherein the transparent substrate comprises a dome.
6. A transmissive optical element according to claim 5 in further combination with a light emitting diode (“LED”) that is located at a base of the dome and spaced apart from an inner surface of the dome.
7. A transmissive optical element according to claim 6 in still further combination with a mounting substrate and wherein the LED and the dome are on the mounting substrate.
8. A transparent optical element according to claim 7 further comprising a bulb that at last partially surrounds the dome and the LED.
