Abstract

A system and method for concurrently and uniformly removing thermal energy from clustered specimen samples.

Claims (23)

1. A sample freezing device comprising:

a base container having a top end, a bottom end, and a lower chamber extending therebetween, the top end having an opening and the bottom end having an inlet port;

a cover having a top end, a bottom end, and an upper chamber extending therebetween, the top end having an outlet port and the bottom end having an opening, the bottom end being configured to interconnect with the top end of the base container;

a sample rack disposed between the base and the cover, the sample rack comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, and an extension defining a perimeter of the sample rack; and

a seal between an entirety of the extension of the sample rack and the base container, wherein the sample rack divides the lower chamber from the upper chamber when the cover is interconnected with the base container.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sample rack is removable.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sample rack further comprises a gas vent formed through the top and bottom surfaces, wherein the upper chamber is in gaseous communication with the lower chamber via the gas vent.

4. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a plurality of gas vents.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the sample rack comprises an opening for receiving a sample vial.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the gas vent is positioned adjacent to the opening for receiving the sample vial.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the sample rack comprises a plurality of openings for receiving a plurality of sample vials.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the gas vent is located between two or more of the plurality of openings.

9. The device of claim 5 , wherein the gas vent comprises a gap between a sample vial and the opening.

10. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a deflector plate positioned within the lower chamber of the base container adjacent the inlet port.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the deflector plate comprises a plurality of slots through which a gas passes from the inlet port and into the upper chamber via the gas vent.

12. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a gas pathway through the inlet port, the lower chamber, the gas vent, the upper chamber, and the outlet port.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the seal comprises an interface between the sample rack and an annular rim protrusion of the base container.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the inlet port further comprises a deflector plate.

15. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an insulating material.

16. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an airtight seal between the opening of the base container and the opening of the cover when the base container is interconnected with the cover.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the outlet port further comprises a conical exterior profile.

18. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of inlet ports and a plurality of outlet ports.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sample rack comprises a plurality of openings for receiving sample vials, the plurality of openings being arranged in a plurality of clustered arrays, wherein heat is removed from the sample vials in part by passive gas diffusion promoted by density gradients.
