Abstract

Technologies related to cache-influenced video games are generally described. In some examples, the content of video game outputs as experienced by players of a video game may be adaptively modified to make more effective use of digital assets that are loaded in a computing system cache. Cache-influenced video games may increase cache use by increasing use, within a video game, of digital assets in a cache relative to assets not in the cache, e.g., assets that are on disk or in database storage. Cached digital assets can be retrieved more efficiently than assets stored elsewhere, and therefore video game performance may be improved.

Claims (40)

1. A method for providing, by a computing system, a cache-influenced video game, the method comprising:

performing, by a computing system, a cache-influenced video game mission selection process to select a video game mission, the cache-influenced video game mission selection process comprising:

using a set of mission input parameters to generate multiple different video game missions;

scoring cache performance of the multiple different video game missions at least in part by identifying digital assets used by the multiple different video game missions, and determining whether the identified digital assets are in a computing system cache; and

selecting the video game mission from among the multiple different video game missions, wherein selecting the video game mission uses a cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission to increase a re-use rate of digital assets in the cache; and

providing, by a computing system, the selected video game mission for video game playback.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of mission input parameters comprises one or more of a player parameter, a difficulty parameter, or a faction parameter.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the multiple different video game missions are generated by submitting multiple mission requests to a procedural mission generator.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein scoring cache performance of the multiple different video game missions comprises scoring cache performance of multiple different paths available within at least one of the multiple different video game missions.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising scoring diversity of the multiple different video game missions, and wherein selecting the video game mission uses a diversity score of the video game mission to select the video game mission.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the video game mission uses the cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission by comparing the cache performance score to a threshold cache performance score.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the video game mission uses the cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission by comparing the cache performance score to cache performance scores of other video game missions.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital assets comprise one or more of models, characters, or maps used in the multiple different video game missions.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cache-influenced video game comprises a multiplayer online game.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the computing system comprises one or more web servers, and wherein the cache comprises a caching tier accessible by the one or more web servers.

11. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer executable instructions executable by a processor, the instructions that, when executed by the processor, implement a cache-influenced video game, which causes the processor to:

perform a cache-influenced video game mission selection process to select a video game mission, the cache-influenced video game mission selection process comprising:

using a set of mission input parameters to generate multiple different video game missions;

scoring cache performance of the multiple different video game missions at least in part by identifying digital assets used by the multiple different video game missions, and determining whether the identified digital assets are in a computing system cache; and

selecting the video game mission from among the multiple different video game missions, wherein selecting the video game mission uses a cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission to increase a re-use rate of digital assets in the cache; and

provide the selected video game mission for video game playback.

12. A computing system configured to provide a cache-influenced video game, comprising:

a processor;

a memory; and

a cache-influenced video game stored in the memory and executable by the processor,

wherein the cache-influenced video game is configured to:

perform a cache-influenced video game mission selection process to select a video game mission, the cache-influenced video game mission selection process comprising:

using a set of mission input parameters to generate multiple different video game missions;

scoring cache performance of the multiple different video game missions at least in part by identifying digital assets used by the multiple different video game missions, and determining whether the identified digital assets are in a computing system cache; and

selecting the video game mission from among the multiple different video game missions, wherein selecting the video game mission uses a cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission to increase a re-use rate of digital assets in the cache; and

provide the selected video game mission for video game playback.

13. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein the set of mission input parameters comprises one or more of a player parameter, a difficulty parameter, or a faction parameter.

14. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein the multiple different video game missions are generated by submitting multiple mission requests to a procedural mission generator.

15. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein scoring cache performance of the multiple different video game missions comprises scoring cache performance of multiple different paths available within at least one of the multiple different video game missions.

16. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein the cache-influenced video game causes the processor to score diversity of the multiple different video game missions, and wherein selecting the video game mission uses a diversity score of the video game mission to select the video game mission.

17. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein selecting the video game mission uses the cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission by comparing the cache performance score to a threshold cache performance score.

18. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein selecting the video game mission uses the cache performance score of the video game mission to select the video game mission by comparing the cache performance score to cache performance scores of other video game missions.

19. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein the digital assets comprise one or more of models, characters, or maps used in the multiple different video game missions.

20. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein the cache-influenced video game comprises a multiplayer online game.

21. The computing system of claim 20 , wherein the cache-influenced computing system comprises one or more web servers, and wherein the cache comprises a caching tier accessible by the one or more web servers.
