Abstract

A mask system for providing pressurized breathable gas includes at least one panel and a seal member, wherein the panel comprises a textile. The panel defines a cavity adapted to receive a patient's nose. The seal member is adapted to sealingly engage with the patient's face. The panel and seal member may be integrally formed in one piece.

Claims (58)

1. A mask system for delivering pressurized breathable gas to a patient for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, comprising: a chamber forming portion including: a front panel and a back panel at least partially forming a cavity adapted to receive a nose of a patient, the front panel and back panel being exposed to therapeutic pressurized breathable gas, the back panel including an opening formed therein through which the patient's nose is received into the cavity; and a seal member formed as part of or coupled to at least one of the front or back panel and adapted to sealingly engage the patient's face, wherein at least one of the front or the back panel comprises a textile and the seal member comprises a polymer, and a rigidizer frame that is coupled to the chamber forming portion to locally rigidize the front panel and/or the back panel, wherein the seal member is positioned between the front panel and the back panel.

2. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the front panel is welded to the back panel.

3. The mask system according to claim 2 , wherein the front and back panels each have a concave shape.

4. The mask system according to claim 2 , wherein the back panel comprises a lower engaging surface and the lower engaging surface is shaped to conform to a septum and/or philtrum of the patient.

5. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the seal member comprises a polymer having a Shore A hardness in the range of 5-20.

6. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a cuff connected to a side portion of the chamber forming portion, the cuff being adapted to receive an air delivery tube.

7. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the back panel and the seal member are integrally formed in one piece.

8. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the seal member has an “S” shape in cross-section having a first end coupled to the chamber forming portion and a second end configured to engage the patient's face.

9. The mask system according to claim 8 , wherein the seal member applies a spring force against the patient's face.

10. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a padding member interconnecting the back panel and the seal member, wherein the padding member is configured to compress thereby urging the seal member into conformance with the patient's face.

11. The mask system according to claim 10 , wherein the padding member comprises foam.

12. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the rigidizer frame is positioned on the back panel and is configured to extend across the patient's upper lip.

13. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the rigidizer frame includes at least one sides of nose portion having a curvature configured to conform to a region of the patient's face between the patient's cheeks and the patient's nasal bridge.

14. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the seal member includes a base layer and an interfacing layer coupled to the base layer and configured to sealingly engage the patient's face.

15. The mask system according to claim 14 , wherein the seal member further includes a cushioning layer provided between the base layer and the interfacing layer.

The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising headgear including a bottom strap coupled to the chamber forming portion and configured to extend from a first side of the chamber forming portion around a rear portion of the patient's neck to a second side of the chamber forming portion.

17. The mask system according to claim 16 , wherein the bottom strap is configured to exert a tensile force on the seal member which pulls the seal member into sealing engagement with the patient's face.

The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising headgear including side straps each coupled to the chamber forming portion and configured to extend from opposing sides of the chamber forming portion, the side strap including a lower portion connected to the chamber forming portion and an upper portion extending upwardly from the lower portion.

19. The mask system according to claim 18 , wherein the side strap is rigidized such that the lower portion has a first vector and the upper portion has a second vector.

20. The mask system according to claim 18 , wherein the headgear further includes a bottom strap connected to and extending between the lower portions of the side straps.

21. The mask system according to claim 18 , wherein the headgear further includes a back strap connected to and extending between the upper portions of the side straps.

22. The mask system according to claim 18 , wherein the headgear further includes a top strap connected to and extending between the upper portions of the side straps, the top strap configured to extend over a top of the patient's head.

23. The mask system according to claim 16 , wherein the headgear further includes side straps each coupled to the chamber forming portion and/or the bottom strap and configured to extend from opposing sides of the chamber forming portion.

24. The mask system according to claim 23 , wherein the side straps have a curved portion, and the side straps are rigidized to provide an upward vector to the chamber forming portion.

25. The mask system according to claim 23 , wherein the headgear further includes a back strap connected to and extending between the side straps.

26. The mask system according to claim 23 , wherein the headgear further includes a top strap connected to and extending between the side straps, the top strap configured to extend over a top of the patient's head.

27. The mask system according to claim 16 , wherein the headgear further includes a front strap coupled to an upper portion of the chamber forming portion, and a crown strap configured to encircle a crown of the patient's head.

28. The mask system according to claim 16 , wherein a front portion of the bottom strap is elastic to provide micro adjustments, and a rear portion of the bottom strap includes an adjustable connection to provide macro adjustments.

29. The mask system according to claim 16 , wherein the headgear further includes a tube anchor provided thereon, the tube anchor being configured to receive an air delivery tube to aid in supporting the weight of the air delivery tube.

The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising an air delivery tube configured to deliver breathable gas to the chamber forming portion, wherein the air delivery tube has four sides including a first pair of opposing sides and a second pair of opposing sides, and the first pair of opposing sides has a length that is longer than the second pair of opposing sides.

31. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the seal member is welded, thermoformed or overmolded to the back panel.

32. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising

a padding member adapted to support the seal member and provide a cushioning effect,

wherein the seal member is adapted to stretch over the patient's nose bridge and surround the patient's airway.

33. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a padding member constructed and arranged to match the contours of the patient's face,

wherein the seal member is adapted to stretch over the patient's nose bridge, and

wherein the chamber forming portion is adapted to flex around the patient's face.

34. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a cuff adapted to connect with an air delivery tube,

wherein the rigidizer frame is formed integrally with the cuff.

35. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the textile includes darts constructed and arranged to shape the textile in a three dimensional form.

36. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a support beam for providing structural support to the chamber forming portion;

at least one connecting portion; and

a vent;

wherein the support beam, the at least one connecting portion and the vent are formed in one piece.

37. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a connecting portion including at least one vent,

wherein the chamber forming portion is constructed from a substantially non-resilient, and substantially flexible first material, and

wherein the polymer is resilient.

38. The mask system of claim 37 , wherein the first material includes the textile.

39. The mask system of claim 37 , wherein the first material is substantially impermeable to air.

40. The mask system of claim 37 , wherein the polymer is tacky.

41. The mask system of claim 37 , further comprising a stiffened portion adapted to be positioned over the patient's top lip.

42. The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a connecting portion including at least one vent,

wherein the textile is a fibrous substantially non-resilient, and substantially flexible material, and

wherein the polymer is resilient.

43. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the rigidizer frame comprises a rigid or semi-rigid material.

44. The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the rigidizer frame includes an interconnection portion and a side of nose portion.

45. The mask system according to claim 44 , wherein the interconnection portion is configured to, in use, extend across the patient's upper lip region.

46. The mask system according to claim 45 , wherein the side of nose portion of the rigidizer frame has a curvature similar to the contour of a side of nose region of the patient's face.
