Abstract

Stair climber apparatuses have a frame having an inclined support that extends from a bottom portion to a top portion; a plurality of stairs that are connected together in series and travel in a loop around the inclined support; an electric motor; and a control circuit that controls a speed of the electric motor and an output direction of the electric motor. The electric motor is operatively connected to the plurality of stairs so as to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support and so as to alternatively move the plurality of stairs in an opposite, downward direction along the inclined support. An operator input device at the bottom portion of the inclined support inputs a boarding command to the control circuit. Based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs along the inclined support. Methods are for operating the stair climber apparatuses.

Claims (35)

1. A stair climber apparatus comprising:

a frame having an inclined support that extends from a bottom portion to a top portion;

a plurality of stairs that are connected together in series and travel in a loop around the inclined support;

an electric motor;

a control circuit that controls a speed of the electric motor and an output direction of the electric motor;

wherein the electric motor is operatively connected to the plurality of stairs so as to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support and so as to alternatively move the plurality of stairs in an opposite, downward direction along the inclined support;

a first operator input device disposed at the top portion of the inclined support, wherein the first operator input device inputs a speed command to the control circuit; and

a second operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, wherein the second operator input device inputs a boarding command to the control circuit, and wherein based on the hoarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs along the inclined support.

2. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs in the upward direction along, the inclined support.

3. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs in the upward direction along the inclined support for a predetermined time period.

4. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs in the upward direction a predetermined distance along the inclined support.

5. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the predetermined distance is a minimum distance required to bring, a new stair around the bottom portion of the inclined support and into a horizontal position for supporting a foot of the operator.

6. The stair climber apparatus according, to claim 1 , wherein based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric, motor so as to move the plurality of stairs in the upward direction along the inclined support at a predetermined speed.

The stair climber apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein actuation of the second operator input device causes the control circuit to control the electric motor to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support until a predetermined time after actuation of the second operator input device ceases.

8. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the second operator input device comprises a pushbutton.

9. The stair climber apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the control circuit controls the speed of the electric motor down to a zero speed when an operator inputs a zero speed command to the first operator input device.

The stair climber apparatus according to claim 9 , comprising a mechanical brake that is movable between a locked position wherein output of the electric motor to the plurality of stairs is prevented and an unlocked position wherein output of the electric, motor to the plurality of stairs is permitted.

11. A method of operating a stair climber apparatus having a frame with an inclined support that extends from a bottom portion to a top portion and a plurality of stairs that are connected together in series and travel in a loop around the inclined support, and a control circuit associated with the stair climber apparatus, the method comprising:

controlling, with the control circuit, a speed of an electric motor and an output direction of the electric motor, wherein the electric motor is operatively connected to the plurality of stairs so as to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support and so as to alternatively move the plurality of stairs in an opposite, downward direction along the inclined support;

upon an operator's actuation of an operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling, with the control circuit, the electric motor to as to move the stairs along the inclined support; and

thereafter controlling, with the control circuit, the speed and output direction of the electric motor based upon the operator's input to an operator input device disposed at the top portion of the inclined support.

12. The method according to claim 11 , comprising, upon actuation of the operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling the electric motor so as to move the stairs upwardly along the inclined support.

13. The method according to claim 11 , comprising, upon actuation of the operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling the electric, motor so as to move the stairs upwardly along the inclined support for a predetermined time period.

14. The method according, to claim 11 , comprising, upon actuation of the operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling the electric motor so as to move the stairs upwardly a predetermined distance along the inclined support.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the predetermined distance is a minimum distance required to bring a new stair around the bottom portion of the inclined support and into a horizontal position for supporting a foot of the operator.

16. The method according to claim 11 , comprising, upon actuation of the operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling the electric motor so as to move the stairs upwardly along the inclined support at a predetermined speed.

The method according to claim 11 , comprising, upon actuation of the second operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support, controlling, the electric motor to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support and until a predetermined time after actuation of the second operator input device ceases.

18. The method according to claim 11 , comprising controlling the speed of the electric motor down to a zero speed when an operator inputs a zero speed command to the operator input device disposed at the top portion of the inclined support.

19. The method according to claim 18 , comprising after the electric motor has zero speed, operating a mechanical brake into a locked position wherein output of the electric motor to the plurality of stairs is prevented.

20. A method of operating is stair climber apparatus having a frame with an inclined support that extends from a bottom portion to a top portion and a plurality of stairs that are connected together in series and travel in a loop around the inclined support, and a control circuit associated with the stair climber apparatus, the method comprising:

actuating, with the control circuit, an operator input device disposed at the bottom portion of the inclined support to input a boarding command to the control circuit;

based upon the boarding command, controlling, with the control circuit, an electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs in at least one of an upward direction along the inclined support and an opposite, downward direction along the inclined support;

stepping onto the plurality of stairs;

inputting a speed command to the control circuit via an operator input device disposed at the top portion of the inclined support; and

based upon the speed command, controlling, with the control circuit, the electric motor so as to control the speed of the moving stairs.
