Abstract

A deposit management system is operable responsive to data included on data bearing records. The system is associated with a plurality of financial funds depositories. Each depository can accept deposit items, such as deposit bags. Each depository includes a bar code reader that can read data from a bar code label that is located on a deposit bag. The system allows merchants to preregister a deposit before performing the deposit. A preregistered deposit is linked with a deposit identifier in a data store. The deposit identifier can be represented in a bar code. If the system determines that a bar code reader of a respective depository read a deposit identifier which corresponds in the data store to a preregistered deposit, then the respective depository is operated to automatically unlock its deposit entry door. The system also allows merchants to review their deposit history.

Claims (39)

1. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium of instructions having instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor, and when executed operable to:

operate a pre-deposit registration system to obtain data representative of a preregistered deposit;

associate identifier data with the preregistered deposit;

download the identifier data from the pre-deposit registration system to a wireless device associated with the preregistered deposit;

operate a wireless reader of a financial funds depository to wirelessly the read identifier data from a deposit item associated with the wireless device during a customer deposit session with the financial funds depository, wherein the depository is associated with a pre-deposit registration system that is operable to store in a data store the identifier data associated with preregistered deposit sessions, wherein the depository includes a lockable and unlockable depository door that controls customer access to a transport path that leads to a chest portion which comprises a deposit item storage area;

verify with the pre-deposit registration system that the identifier data read by the wireless reader corresponds to preregistered deposit; and

operate the depository during the customer deposit session to automatically unlock the door, responsive at least in part to a determination that the identifier data read by the wireless reader is associated with the preregistered deposit stored in the data store.

2. The computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless reader includes a bar code reader that is operable to wirelessly read bar code data from a bar code.

3. The computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless reader is operable to read deposit data from a financial funds deposit bag located in the depository at a location that is inaccessible to a depositor; and

the instructions are further operable to operate the wireless reader to read deposit data from a financial funds deposit bag positioned at the location.

4. The computer readable medium according to claim 3 , wherein the location is in the transport path; and

the instructions are further operable to operating the wireless reader to read the deposit data from a financial funds deposit bag positioned in the transport path.

5. The computer readable medium according to claim 3 , wherein the reader comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag reader; and

wherein the instructions are operable to operate the RFID tag reader to read the deposit data.

6. The computer readable medium according to claim 3 , wherein the reader comprises a near field communication (NFC) reader and

wherein the instructions are operable to operate the NFC reader to read the deposit data.

7. The computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein deposit transaction data is provided during preregistration.

8. Apparatus comprising:

a pre-deposit registration system operable to obtain data representative of a preregistered deposit;

a wireless device associated with a deposit item;

a financial funds depository that is associated with the pre-deposit registration system, the financial funds depository includes a reader;

wherein the pre-deposit registration system is operable to associate identifier data with the preregistered deposit;

wherein the wireless device is operable to download the identifier data from the pre-deposit registration;

wherein the financial funds depository includes depository door that controls customer access to a transport path that leads to a chest portion which comprises a deposit item storage area;

wherein the financial funds depository is operable to verify via the pre-deposit registration system whether the wireless read identifier from the wireless device associated with the deposit item corresponds to the preregistered deposit; and

wherein the financial funds depository is operable to automatically unlock the depository door, responsive at least in part to the wireless reader reading identifier data that is linked in the data store with a preregistered deposit session.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the reader is operable to read visible indicia.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the reader includes a bar code scanner.

11. A method comprising:

operating a pre-deposit registration system to obtain data representative of a preregistered deposit;

associating deposit identification data with the preregistered deposit;

downloading the deposit identification data from the pre-deposit registration system to a wireless device associated with the preregistered deposit;

operating a financial funds depository to read deposit the deposit identification data during a customer deposit session, wherein the depository includes an interior storage area, wherein the depository includes a transport path that leads to the interior storage area, wherein customer access to the transport path allows a customer to deposit items into the interior storage area;

verifying the deposit identification data read by the wireless corresponds to the preregistered deposit;

operating the depository to allow customer access to the transport path responsive at least in part to verifying the read deposit identification data corresponds to the preregistered deposit;

operating the depository to determine that at least one item was received during the customer deposit session; and

operating the depository to cause a message to be sent to the deposit management system;

wherein the message indicates that the specific deposit was carried out at the depository.

12. The method set forth in claim 11 , wherein the financial funds depository employs a wireless reader to read the identification data while deposit items are prevented from being placed into the depository.
