Abstract

Various methods are provided for metathesizing a feedstock. In one aspect, a method includes providing a feedstock including a natural oil, chemically treating the feedstock under conditions sufficient to diminish catalyst poisons in the feedstock, and, following the treating, combining a metathesis catalyst with the feedstock under conditions sufficient to metathesize the feedstock.

Claims (35)

1. A method of metathesizing a feedstock, comprising:

providing a feedstock comprising an unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester and one or more catalyst poisons;

treating the feedstock with a reducing agent or an inorganic base to chemically diminish the one or more catalyst poisons;

following the treating, washing the feedstock to remove the reducing agent or the inorganic base and byproducts from the treating; and

following the treating and the washing, reacting the unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester of the feedstock in the presence of a metathesis catalyst to form a metathesized product.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester is an alkyl ester of oleic acid, linoleic acid, or linolenic acid.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester is an unsaturated fatty acid methyl ester.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedstock further comprises a saturated fatty acid alkyl ester.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more catalyst poisons comprise peroxides.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more catalyst poisons comprise non-peroxide poisons.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with a reducing agent.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with an inorganic base.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with a reducing agent and an inorganic base.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing agent is a sulfite, a borohydride, a phosphine, or a thiosulfate.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic base is a carbonate, a bicarbonate, or a hydroxide.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treating further comprises introducing an adsorbent to the feedstock.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metathesis catalyst is a ruthenium carbene complex.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester is derived from canola oil, coconut oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, linseed oil, palm kernel oil, tung oil, jatropha oil, castor oil, tall oil, lard, tallow, chicken fat, yellow grease, or fish oil.

15. A method of metathesizing a feedstock, comprising:

providing a feedstock comprising an unsaturated fatty acid glyceride and one or more catalyst poisons;

treating the feedstock with a reducing agent or an inorganic base to chemically diminish the one or more catalyst poisons;

following the treating, washing the treated feedstock to remove the reducing agent or the inorganic base and byproducts from the treating; and

following the treating and the washing, reacting the unsaturated fatty acid glyceride of the feedstock in the presence of a metathesis catalyst to form a metathesized product.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid glyceride is a glyceride of oleic acid, linoleic acid, or linolenic acid.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid glyceride is a triglyceride.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the one or more catalyst poisons comprise peroxides.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the one or more catalyst poisons comprise non-peroxide poisons.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with a reducing agent.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with an inorganic base.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein the treating comprises treating the feedstock with a reducing agent and an inorganic base.

23. The method of claim 15 , wherein the reducing agent is a sulfite, a borohydride, a phosphine, or a thiosulfate.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic base is a carbonate, a bicarbonate, or a hydroxide.

25. The method of claim 15 , wherein the treating further comprises introducing an adsorbent to the feedstock.

26. The method of claim 15 , wherein the metathesis catalyst is a ruthenium carbene complex.

27. The method of claim 15 , wherein the unsaturated fatty acid glyceride is derived from canola oil, coconut oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, linseed oil, palm kernel oil, tung oil, jatropha oil, castor oil, tall oil, lard, tallow, chicken fat, yellow grease, or fish oil.
