Abstract

Techniques for third party verification using override IP addresses is described, including detecting a request header from an endpoint, the request header being associated with a request for a media file, initiating a download of the media file to the endpoint, evaluating the request header to identify an address associated with the endpoint, generating a notification comprising the address, the notification being configured to indicate the address overrides a source address identified by a field in a packet associated with the request header, and sending the notification to report data associated with the media file, wherein the address overrides the source address to identify a source of the request.

Claims (64)

2 . A system for replacing a server identification parameter with a client identification parameter, the system comprising:

a database configured to store data associated with content objects;

a media server configured to:

receive a request for a content object from a client, wherein the client is an end-user system;

identify the client identification parameter based on the request for the content object, wherein the client identification parameter is associated with the client;

respond to the request for the content object by initiating a download of the content object to the client from the media server, wherein the media server is separate from the end-user system;

prepare a first notification to transmit from the media server to a verification server, wherein:

the media server is separate from the verification server;

the first notification comprises the server identification parameter; and

the server identification parameter is associated with the media server;

replace the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter in the first notification to create a modified notification; and

transmit the modified notification, which includes the client identification parameter, to the verification server, the verification server being:

separate from the media server; and

associated with a verification service.

3 . The system for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 2 , wherein the server identification parameter is an IP address.

4 . The system for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 2 , wherein the content object is a media file.

The system for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 2 , wherein the media server is further configured to determine that downloading of the content object to the client is terminated before completion of downloading the content object to the client.

The system for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 5 , wherein the media server is further configured to transmit a second notification from the media server to the verification server, the second notification indicating termination of downloading the content object from the media server to the client.

7 . A method for replacing a server identification parameter with a client identification parameter, the method comprising:

receiving a request for a content object from a client, wherein the client is an end-user system;

identifying the client identification parameter based on the request for the content object, wherein the client identification parameter is associated with the client;

responding to the request for the content object by initiating a download of the content object to the client from a media server, wherein the media server is separate from the end-user system;

preparing a first notification to transmit from the media server to a verification server, wherein:

the media server is separate from the verification server;

the first notification comprises the server identification parameter; and

the server identification parameter is associated with the media server;

replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter in the first notification to create a modified notification; and

transmitting the modified notification, which includes the client identification parameter, to the verification server, the verification server being:

separate from the media server; and

associated with a verification service.

8 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , wherein the server identification parameter is an IP address.

9 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , wherein the content object is a media file.

10 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

determining download of the content object to the client is terminated before completion of downloading the content object; and

transmitting a second notification from the media server to the verification server, wherein:

the second notification indicates termination of downloading the content object from the media server to the client; and

the second notification comprises the server identification parameter instead of the client identification parameter.

11 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , further comprising determining download of the content object is completed.

The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 11 , further comprising transmitting a second notification from the media server to the verification server, the second notification indicating completion of downloading the content object from the media server to the client.

13 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , wherein the first notification is an HTTP message.

14 . The method for replacing the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter as recited in claim 7 , wherein the verification service stores data representative of traffic and/or performance analysis associated with content object downloads.

15 . A memory device having instructions that when executed cause one or more processors to perform the following steps for replacing a server identification parameter with a client identification parameter:

receive a request for a content object from a client, wherein the client is an end-user system;

identify the client identification parameter based on the request for the content object, wherein the client identification parameter is associated with the client;

respond to the request for the content object by initiating a download of the content object to the client from a media server, wherein the media server is separate from the end-user system;

prepare a first notification to transmit from the media server to a verification server, wherein:

the media server is separate from the verification server;

the first notification comprises the server identification parameter; and

the server identification parameter is associated with the media server;

replace the server identification parameter with the client identification parameter in the first notification to create a modified notification; and

transmit the modified notification, which includes the client identification parameter, to the verification server, the verification server being:

separate from the media server; and

associated with a verification service.

16 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the server identification parameter is an IP address.

17 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine download of the content object to the client is terminated before completion of downloading the content object to the client; and

transmit a second notification from the media server to the verification server, the second notification indicating termination of downloading the content object from the media server to the client.

18 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine download of the content object to the client is completed; and

transmit a second notification from the media server to the verification server, the second notification indicating completion of downloading the content object from the media server to the client.

19 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the request from the client has a header, and the header comprises the client identification parameter.

20 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the first notification is an HTTP message.

21 . The memory device having instructions as recited in claim 15 , wherein the verification service stores data representative of traffic and/or performance analysis associated with content object downloads.
