Abstract

A composite material golf club head is provided having a body made from a first metal and a face insert press fitted to a portion of the body and made from a second metal The metals are chosen so that the first metal is heavier than the second metal. The second metal is disposed towards the front and top of the body, and is preferably hard-anodized. In addition, an interlocking structure, for example rectangular or dove tail shaped channels, is provided in the body so that the face insert becomes embedded in the interlocking structure to anchor the face insert to the body. Portions of the golf club head, such as the face insert or sole plate, are anodized to protect against corrosion. The anodized coating is colored to improve aesthetic characteristics or infused with a polymer to increase or reduce friction.

Claims (24)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion;

a face insert attached to a front of the body portion, the face insert comprising a ball-striking surface having an anodized coating infused with a high-friction polymer material to increase friction when the ball-striking surface makes contact with a ball; and

a sole plate attached to a bottom of the body portion, the sole plate having an anodized coating infused with a low friction polymer material to minimize friction when the sole makes contact with the ground;

wherein the anodized coating of at least one of the face and sole plate inserts comprises a dye or pigment.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the body portion is selected from a hosel area, a crown, and a back region.

3. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the anodized coating of at least one of the face and sole plate inserts is a hard-anodic coating.

4. The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a high density weight member positioned behind or below a center of gravity of the golf club head, wherein the high density weight member comprises a material having a density greater than a density of the body portion.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the front of the body portion comprises a cutout sized and dimensioned to receive the face insert.

6. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the front and bottom of the body portion have a cutout sized and dimensioned to receive an insert forming a portion of the face and sole of the club head.

7. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein the insert is secured to the body with fasteners.

8. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein the insert is secured to the body with cold forging or swaging.

9. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein the insert is secured to the body with a resin.

10. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the club is an iron-type club.

11. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the club is a wood-type club, a driver, or a hybrid.

12. A method of making a golf club head comprising:

providing a golf club head comprising a body portion, a face insert attached to a front of the body portion, and a sole plate attached to a bottom of the body portion;

applying an anodized coating infused with a high-friction polymer material to a ball-striking surface of the face insert to increase friction when the ball-striking surface makes contact with a ball; and

applying an anodized coating infused with a low friction polymer material to the sole plate to minimize friction when the sole makes contact with the ground;

wherein the anodized coating applied to at least one of the face and sole inserts comprises a dye or pigment.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the coating applied to at least one of the face and sole inserts is a hard-anodized coating.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hard-anodized coating is between about 0.0005 inch and 0.0045 inch (between about 12 μm and 115 μm) in thickness.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the method comprises a two-step electrolytic process or an integral coloring process.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising masking a portion of the golf club head to prevent the portion from receiving the anodized coating comprising a dye or pigment.
