Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer readable media for maintaining packet data protocol (PDP) context while performing data offload are disclosed. According to one aspect, a method for maintaining PDP context while performing data offload includes detecting a data offload condition wherein a UE for which a first network node is maintaining a PDP context is sending or receiving data using a data path that does not include the first network node. While the data offload condition exists, packets are sent from a source other than the UE to the first network node so as to cause the first network node to maintain the PDP context for the UE. In one embodiment, a node interposed between the UE and the first network node periodically sends dummy packets or heart beat packets to the first network node on behalf of the UE, which may include packets that appear to come from the UE.

Claims (34)

1. A method for maintaining packet data protocol (PDP) context for a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

detecting a data offload condition wherein the UE is sending or receiving data using a data path that does not include a first network node, and wherein a first PDP context for the UE is maintained at the first network node, and wherein the first PDP context is maintained at the first network node as long as periodic heartbeat signals are received by the first network node;

sending, in response to the detected data offload condition, a lock command to the first network node, wherein the lock command prevents deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node regardless of the receipt of the periodic heartbeat signals by the first network node;

detecting an end of the data offload condition; and

sending an unlock command to the first network node in response to detecting the end of the data offload condition, wherein the unlock command allows deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lock command sent to the first network node results in the first network node masking an idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the unlock command unmasks the idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a second PDP context for the UE is maintained a second network node.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

sending, while the data offload condition exists, the lock command to the second network node so as to cause the second network node to continue maintaining the second PDP context for the UE.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a locked status of the UE is stored in the PDP context of the UE.

7. A system operable for maintaining packet data protocol (PDP) context for a user equipment (UE), the system comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory including computer-readable instructions that, upon execution by the processor, cause the system to:

detect a data offload condition, wherein the UE is sending or receiving data using a data path that does not include a first network node, and wherein a first PDP context for the UE is maintained at the first network node, and wherein the first PDP context is maintained at the first network node as long as periodic heartbeat signals are received by the first network node;

send, in response to the detected data offload condition, a lock command to the first network node, wherein the lock command prevents deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node regardless of the receipt of the periodic heartbeat signals by the first network node;

detect an end of the data offload condition; and

send an unlock command to the first network node in response to detecting the end of the data offload condition, wherein the unlock command allows deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the lock command sent to the first network node results in the first network node masking an idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the lock command unmasks the idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein a second PDP context for the UE is maintained a second network node.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the computer-readable instructions, upon execution by the processor, further cause the system to send, while the data offload condition exists, the lock command to the second network node so as to cause the second network node to continue maintaining the second PDP context for the UE.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein a locked status of the UE is stored in the PDP context of the UE.

13. A network device for maintaining packet data protocol (PDP) context for a user equipment (UE), the network device comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory including computer-readable instructions that, upon execution by the processor, cause the network device to:

detect a data offload condition wherein the UE is sending or receiving data using a data path that does not include a first network node, and wherein a first PDP context for the UE is maintained at the first network node, and wherein the first PDP context is maintained at the first network node as long as periodic heartbeat signals are received by the first network node; and

send, in response to the detected data offload condition, a lock command to the first network node, wherein the lock command prevents deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node regardless of the receipt of the periodic heartbeat signals by the first network node;

detect an end of the data offload condition; and

send an unlock command to the first network node in response to detecting the end of the data offload condition, wherein the unlock command allows deletion of the first PDP context by the first network node.

14. The network device of claim 13 , wherein the lock command sent to the first network node results in the first network node masking an idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

15. The network device of claim 14 , wherein the lock command unmasks the idle timer associated with the periodic heartbeat signal.

16. The network device of claim 13 , wherein a second PDP context for the UE is maintained a second network node and wherein the computer-readable instructions, upon execution by the processor, further cause the network device to send, while the data offload condition exists, the lock command to the second network node so as to cause the second network node to continue maintaining the second PDP context for the UE.

17. The network device of claim 13 , wherein a locked status of the UE is stored in the PDP context of the UE.
