Abstract

Techniques for and a wearable device with component protective overmolding are described. In one embodiment, the wearable device has one or more elements coupled to a framework, a protective material selectively applied over the one or more elements, a first protective layer formed substantially over the framework, the one or more elements, and the protective material, and a second protective layer formed substantially over the first protective layer, the second protective layer being removable and providing a surface configured to receive a pattern. In one embodiment, the one or more elements may be a sensor. Further, the protective material may comprise a material that is applied in substantially atmospheric conditions, and the first protective layer and the second protective layer may comprise a material that is molded or formed in harsh environmental conditions.

Claims (31)

1 . A wearable device, comprising:

one or more elements coupled to a framework, wherein the one or more elements comprises a sensor;

a protective material selectively applied over the one or more elements;

a first protective layer formed substantially over the framework, the one or more elements, and the protective material;

a second protective layer formed substantially over the first protective layer, the second protective layer being removable and providing a surface configured to receive a pattern.

2 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the first protective layer is removable.

3 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the protective material comprises a material that can be applied at substantially atmospheric pressure.

4 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the protective material comprises an ultra violet curable material.

5 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the first protective layer comprises a material selected from a group consisting of thermoplastic, polymer, elastomer, and thermoplastic elastomer.

6 . The wearable device of claim 1 , further comprising a protective coating substantially over the second protective layer, the protective coating having a protective property.

7 . A wearable device, comprising:

one or more elements coupled to a framework, wherein the one or more elements comprises a sensor;

a securing coating selectively applied over the one or more elements;

a first protective layer formed substantially over the framework, the one or more elements, and the securing coating;

a second protective layer formed substantially over the first protective layer, the second protective layer being removable and providing a surface configured to receive a pattern.

8 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the securing coating comprises an epoxy.

9 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the securing coating comprises a curable material configured to prevent damage to the one or more elements when the first protective layer or the second protective layer are formed.

10 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises a vibrator configured to use electrical power from a battery to generate a vibration.

11 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises a printed circuit board assembly.

12 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises a memory configured to store data.

13 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises a processor.

14 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises an accelerometer.

15 . The wearable device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more elements comprises an analog audio plug.

16 . The wearable device of claim 15 , wherein the analog audio plug is a TRRS.

17 . A wearable device, comprising:

one or more elements coupled to a framework, wherein the one or more elements comprises a sensor;

a protective material selectively applied over the one or more elements;

a molding formed substantially over the framework, the one or more elements, and the protective material, the molding being removable and providing a surface configured to receive a pattern.

18 . The wearable device of claim 17 , wherein the framework comprises a metal.

19 . The wearable device of claim 17 , wherein the protective material comprises a material that is applied in substantially atmospheric conditions, and the molding comprises a material that is molded in harsh environmental conditions.

20 . The wearable device of claim 17 , further comprising a protective coating formed substantially over the molding, the protective coating having a protective property.
