Abstract

Methods and devices for generating gas from nitrous oxide are provided as well as downstream uses for the product gas. Reactor devices of the invention are compact and incorporate a novel heat-exchange/regenerative cooling system to optimize N 2 O decomposition and reactor durability.

Claims (22)

1. A system for nitrous oxide decomposition comprising:

a source of nitrous oxide, and

a gas generator comprising:

a reaction chamber for accepting nitrous oxide at a first port and for releasing gas from the nitrous oxide decomposition at a second port, the reaction chamber having an interior and an exterior chamber wall, the interior chamber wall for constraining a nitrous oxide decomposition reaction and the exterior chamber wall defining a jacket between it and the interior chamber wall; and

the jacket at least partially enveloping the reaction chamber, the jacket defining one or more channels between the interior chamber wall and the exterior chamber wall, the one or more channels for transporting the nitrous oxide within the jacket from the first port of the reaction chamber and for facilitating the transfer of heat generated during the nitrous oxide decomposition to an incoming source of nitrous oxide, the incoming source of nitrous oxide being preheated to more efficiently decompose within the gas generator, and

wherein the reaction chamber is regeneratively cooled by the incoming nitrous oxide.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the nitrous oxide decomposition reaction further comprises a catalyst to reduce the temperature required for the nitrous oxide decomposition.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the catalyst is selected from the group consisting of rhodium, ruthenium, platinum, copper, iridium, nickel, magnesium oxide and zirconium oxide.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the gas generator used to constrain the nitrous oxide decomposition is constructed from nickel.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the nickel is coated with MgO.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reaction chamber volume is from about 0.5 cubic inches to about 12 cubic inches.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the gas generator is part of a monopropellant rocket engine system.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the gas generator is part of a hybrid engine system combining nitrous oxidizer with a solid fuel source.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the gas generator is part of a power generating system.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the gas generator is a buoyancy engine for underwater vehicles.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the gas generator is part of a pneumatic machine.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gas generator further comprises a gap in the jacket, the gap providing a constrained space by which nitrous oxide flows into the reaction chamber.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gas generator further comprises heat tape, the heat tape wrapped around the gas generator allowing for the reaction chamber to be electrically preheated.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a smaller generator, wherein the gas generator is heated to an initial operating temperature by a hot gas produced by the smaller generator.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the volume of the reaction chamber is at least an order of magnitude larger than the total volume of the one or more channels in the jacket.

16. A method of inflating an inflatable structure, the method comprising the use of the system of claim 1 .

17. A method of providing heat to a constrained environment, comprising the use of the system of claim 1 .
