Abstract

A method for operating a user equipment (UE) includes determining a first operating state in accordance with a first message traffic generated by a non-session based application executing in the UE, setting a state machine in the UE to the first operating state, and transmitting a first message in accordance with the state machine.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a user equipment (UE) in a power saving state different from an idle state, a paging message from a network element, the power saving state supporting UE data transfer without dynamic resource allocation grant from the network element;

transmitting, by the UE in the power saving state, a message comprising a dedicated connection signature (DCS), the UE assigned an UE identifier (ID) based on the DCS obtained by the UE upon initial network entry, the UE ID allocated by the network element, the UE ID uniquely identifying the UE, the UE ID being associated with a media access control (MAC) ID and time and frequency resources assigned to the UE, the DCS being used for a state transition for the UE from the power saving state to an active state, and wherein the power saving state supports maintenance of the UE ID for data transmission and data reception by the UE in the power saving state;

after the transmitting the message, receiving, by the UE, a response message for configuring the UE to transition from the power saving state to the active state; and

after the receiving the response message, transitioning, by the UE, from the power saving state to the active state.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active state supports the data transmission and the data reception with active connection management.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE ID is maintained for the UE data transfer between the UE and the network element when the UE is in the power saving state, wherein the UE data transfer includes one or more of the data transmission and the data reception.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the response message comprises power control information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the response message comprises timing advance information.

6. The method of claim 1 , the power saving state supporting the UE data transfer without the dynamic resource allocation grant and without semi-persistent scheduling from the network element.

7. The method of claim 1 , the message requesting the state transition from the power saving state to the active state for the UE.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE ID comprises a combination of the MAC ID, a time resource ID, and a frequency resource ID, and wherein the combination of the MAC ID, the time resource ID, and the frequency resource ID allows reuse of the MAC ID with different UEs.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE ID has a one-to-one mapping to the DCS.

10. An apparatus comprising:

a non-transitory memory storage comprising instructions; and

at least one processor in communication with the non-transitory memory storage, wherein the at least one processor executes the instructions to:

receive, while the apparatus is in a power saving state different from an idle state, a paging message from a network element, the power saving state supporting apparatus data transfer without dynamic resource allocation grant from the network element;

transmit, while the apparatus is in the power saving state, a message comprising dedicated connection signature (DCS), the apparatus assigned an apparatus identifier (ID) based on the DCS obtained by the apparatus upon initial network entry, the apparatus ID allocated by the network element, the apparatus ID uniquely identifying the apparatus, the apparatus ID being associated with a media access control (MAC) ID and time and frequency resources assigned to the apparatus, the DCS being used for a state transition for the apparatus from the power saving state to an active state, and wherein the power saving state supports maintenance of the apparatus ID for data transmission and data reception by the apparatus in the power saving state;

after transmitting the message, receive a response message for configuring the apparatus to transition from the power saving state to the active state; and

after receiving the response message, transition from the power saving state to the active state.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the active state supports the data transmission and the data reception with active connection management.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the apparatus ID is maintained for the apparatus data transfer between the apparatus and the network element when the apparatus is in the power saving state, wherein the apparatus data transfer includes one or more of the data transmission and the data reception.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the response message comprises power control information.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the apparatus is a user equipment (UE).

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the response message comprises timing advance information.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by an apparatus, cause the apparatus to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving, while the apparatus is in a power saving state different from an idle state, a paging message from a network element, the power saving state supporting apparatus data transfer without dynamic resource allocation grant from the network element;

transmitting, while the apparatus is in the power saving state, a message comprising dedicated connection signature (DCS), the apparatus assigned an apparatus identifier (ID) based on the DCS obtained by the apparatus upon initial network entry, the apparatus ID allocated by the network element, the apparatus ID uniquely identifying the apparatus, the apparatus ID being associated with a media access control (MAC) ID and time and frequency resources assigned to the apparatus, the DCS being used for a state transition for the apparatus from the power saving state to an active state, and wherein the power saving state supports maintenance of the apparatus ID for data transmission and data reception by the apparatus in the power saving state;

after the transmitting the message, receiving a response message for configuring the apparatus to transition from the power saving state to the active state; and

after the receiving the response message, transitioning the apparatus from the power saving state to the active state.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the active state supports the data transmission and the data reception with active connection management.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the apparatus ID is maintained for the apparatus data transfer between the apparatus and the network element when the apparatus is in the power saving state, wherein the apparatus data transfer includes one or more of the data transmission and the data reception.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the response message comprises power control information.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the response message comprises timing advance information.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the apparatus is a user equipment (UE).
