Abstract

Techniques provided herein implement systems and methods that can improve access to content items, from an online content source, by a client device. According to some embodiments, an intermediate content streaming system is implemented on a client device for caching digital content locally at the client device as the content is streamed to the client device from an online content source (e.g., content server) over a network. Additionally, according to some embodiments, a priority-based content downloading system is implemented on a client device to facilitate priority-based pre-downloading of content items to the client device before a user at the client device is presented with access to the content items, such as through a social networking news feed.

Claims (34)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

identifying a first content item scheduled to be presented on a news feed for access by a user, the news feed being presented on a display of a client device;

determining a first priority for the first content item; and

before the first content item is presented on the news feed for access by the user, pre-downloading at least some of the first content item from a first content server to the client device based on the first priority.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the first content item on the news feed after the at least some of the first content item is pre-downloaded to the client device.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a second content item scheduled to be presented on the news feed for access by the user;

determining a second priority for the second content item;

before the pre-downloading of the at least some of the first content item from the first content server to the client device, pre-downloading at least some of the second content item from a second content server to the client device based on the second priority, the second priority being a higher priority than the first priority.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , further comprising presenting the second content item on the news feed for access by the user.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on whether the first content item is auto-played when visible to the user.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on whether the first content item is associated with an advertisement.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on a preference of the user.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on availability of a resource of the client device.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on a content type of the first content item.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on metadata of the first content item.

11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first priority is based on social networking information associated with the first content item.

12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information comprises a quantity of likes of the first content item by social network users on a social network.

13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information comprises a quantity of shares of the first content item by social network users on a social network.

14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information comprises a quantity of comments associated with the first content item by social network users on a social network.

15 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information identifies one or more social network users who have liked the first content item on a social network.

16 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information identifies one or more social network users who have shared the first content item on a social network.

17 . The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the social networking information identifies one or more social network users who have commented on the first content item on a social network.

18 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the news feed relates to a social network.

19 . A computer system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory storing instructions configured to instruct the at least one processor to perform:

identifying a first content item scheduled to be presented on a news feed for access by a user, the news feed being presented on a display of a client device;

determining a first priority for the first content item; and

before the first content item is presented on the news feed for access by the user, pre-downloading at least some of the first content item from a first content server to the client device based on the first priority.

20 . A computer-storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause a computer system to perform a computer-implemented method comprising:

identifying a first content item scheduled to be presented on a news feed for access by a user, the news feed being presented on a display of a client device;

determining a first priority for the first content item; and

before the first content item is presented on the news feed for access by the user, pre-downloading at least some of the first content item from a first content server to the client device based on the first priority.
