Abstract

Systems and methods are presented to facilitate caching of programming from broadcast and/or content streaming services to a user device for local playback. In addition, metadata can be provided to guide the user in selecting, caching, or playing the cachable content. In some exemplary embodiments, a receiver or other user device can automatically select the programming to be cached based on a user's historical topic interest and listening history. In some exemplary embodiments, the metadata can also include DRM information that can limit the ability of a user to playback the content, so as to comply, if necessary, with operative legal requirements related to usage of the content.

Claims (36)

1. A method of providing content to a user device, comprising:

automatically downloading (i) content data and (ii) metadata related to said content data on a user device, said metadata including at least one of program titles, descriptions, topic assignments, and original air dates; and

making said content available to a user for local playback via a menu on a user interface on the device;

wherein said downloaded content is a subset of available content to download, and said content is automatically downloaded by the user device in response to either:

(i) a message within the metadata sent to the device by a content provider instructing the device to download the content and associated metadata; or

(ii) reading the metadata and a recommendation engine running on the device identifying content to download based on various user listening behavior parameters.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said content is chosen by a content provider.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said content provider is one of a satellite radio broadcaster and a content streaming service.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein said content is automatically downloaded to the user device using a Reliable File Delivery algorithm.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said Reliable File Delivery algorithm transmits a binary file as a stream of blocks which are over time accumulated by the user device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein once a sufficient number of blocks are accumulated by the user device the user device executes decoder software to reconstruct the original binary file.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said content comprises a group of related content elements or tracks.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein multiple groups can be transmitted to a user device at the same time.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the user device provides a user with a synopsis of upcoming groups available for download, so that the user can select which group(s) they are interesting in receiving or not receiving.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said metadata includes metadata useful for describing the contents of each group, as well as metadata specific to each program included in a group.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said metadata further includes rights management information, including at least one of:

restrictions on the number of times a program can be played and date ranges within which programs may be played on the user device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein determination of which files are downloaded is based on the total cumulative receive time the receiver will be on during the period of data transmission.

The method of claim 12 , wherein some “high priority” content, which is either or any of (a) relatively short duration content, (b) broadcast at a relatively higher data rate and/or (c) broadcast at a relatively higher repeat rate is received in preference to other “low priority” content that is either or any of (d) relatively long duration content, (e) broadcast at a relatively lower data rate and/or (f) broadcast at a relatively low repeat rate.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein said recommendation engine identifies what content to download based on various user listening behavior parameters.

15. A system for providing content to a user device, comprising:

at least one processor;

a display; and

memory containing instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to:

automatically download (i) content data and (ii) metadata related to said content data on a user device, said metadata including at least one of program titles, descriptions, topic assignments, and original air dates; and

make said content available to a user for local playback via a menu on a user interface on the device;

wherein said downloaded content is a subset of available content to download, and said content is automatically downloaded by the user device in response to either:

(i) a message within the metadata sent to the device by a content provider instructing the device to download the content and associated metadata; or

(ii) reading the metadata and a recommendation engine running on the device identifying content to download based on various user listening behavior parameters.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein said metadata includes a message sent to the device by a content provider instructing the device to download the content and associated metadata.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to:

automatically download (i) content data and (ii) metadata related to said content data on a user device, said metadata including at least one of program titles, descriptions, topic assignments, and original air dates; and

make said content available to a user for local playback via a menu on a user interface on the device;

wherein said downloaded content is a subset of available content to download, and said content is automatically downloaded by the user device in response to either:

(i) a message within the metadata sent to the device by a content provider instructing the device to download the content and associated metadata; or

(ii) reading the metadata and a recommendation engine running on the device identifying content to download based on various user listening behavior parameters.
