Grafted para-aramid fiber and method of making
View Patent ↗A fiber comprising poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) having monomers such as N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide grafted onto the fiber surface.
1. A fiber comprising poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) having N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups grafted onto the fiber surface.
2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups have undergone graft polymerization onto the fiber surface.
3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups comprise 0.1 to 10 weight % of the total weight of the fiber.
4. The fiber of claim 3 wherein the N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups comprise 1 to 10 weight % of the total weight of the fiber.
5. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen on 0.25 to 75 mole percent of the amide sites of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) on the fiber surface have been replaced by grafting N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups.
6. The fiber of claim 5 wherein the hydrogen on 10 to 50 mole percent of the amide sites on the fiber surface have been replaced by grafting N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide groups.
7. A continuous filament yarn, cord, spun staple yarn, nonwoven fabric, floc, pulp or chopped strand comprising the fiber of claim 1 .
8. A fiber-reinforced composite comprising a matrix resin and a continuous filament yarn, spun staple yarn, nonwoven fabric, floc, pulp or chopped strand of claim 7 .
9. A fiber-reinforced rubber article comprising an elastomer and a continuous filament yarn, cord, spun staple yarn, nonwoven fabric, floc, pulp or chopped strand of claim 7 .
10. A dipped cord suitable for use in a rubber compound comprising the fiber of claim 1 coated with a styrene-butadiene-vinylpyridine rubber latex.
