Abstract

Disclosed herein is a display apparatus including a pixel array and a driver, the pixel array including rows of scanning lines, rows of feeding lines, columns of signal lines, and a matrix of pixels disposed at the crossings of the scanning lines and the signal lines, the driver including a write scanner for supplying a control signal successively to the scanning lines, a power supply scanner for switching each of the feeding lines between a high potential, a low potential, and an intermediate potential between the high potential and the low potential, and a signal selector for supplying a video signal, which alternately switches between a signal potential and a reference potential, to each of the signal lines.

Claims (68)

1. A display apparatus comprising:

a pixel array; and

a driver,

the pixel array including a plurality of power supply lines and a plurality of pixels, each of the pixels including a driving circuit and a light-emitting element, the driving circuit being connected to an input terminal of the light-emitting element to control a current supply,

wherein the driver is configured to drive a given one of the pixels so as to, in this order:

during a first period, execute a first operation to apply a low potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element is kept in non-emission state;

during a second period, execute a second operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light;

during a third period, execute a third operation to apply an intermediate potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element stops light emission, the intermediate potential being between the low and high potentials; and

during a fourth period, execute a fourth operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light, and

wherein the third operation is executed on the given one of the pixels at least within a given frame period in which the light-emitting element of the given one of the pixels is set to emit light.

2. The display apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver is configured to, prior to the first period of the given frame period, apply the intermediate potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element of the given one of the pixels stops light-emission for a previous frame period.

3. The display apparatus of claim 2 ,

wherein the driver is configured to, within the given frame period, subsequent to the first operation and prior to the second operation, perform a threshold correction operation for the given one of the plurality of pixels.

4. The display apparatus of claim 3 ,

wherein the driving circuit includes a driving transistor and a capacitor, and

the driver is configured to perform the threshold correction operation by supplying a current through the driving transistor to the capacitor.

5. The display apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver is configured to drive a given one of the pixels so as to execute the first, the second, the third and the fourth within the given frame period.

6. The display apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver is configured to set a potential of the input terminal of the light-emitting element via one of the power supply lines coupled to the given one of the pixels.

7. The display apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the third operation is executed immediately after the second operation, and the fourth operation is executed immediately after the third operation such that low potential is not applied between the beginning of the second period and the end of the fourth period.

8. The display apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driving circuit includes a sampling transistor configured to sample an image signal such that the light-emitting element emits light according to the image signal,

and wherein the sampling transistor is set in non-conductive state throughout a period from the beginning of the second period to the end of the fourth period.

9. A display apparatus comprising:

a pixel array; and

a driver,

the pixel array including a plurality of power supply lines and a plurality of pixels, each of the pixels including a driving circuit and a light-emitting element, the driving circuit being connected to an input terminal of the light-emitting element to control a current supply,

wherein the driver is configured to drive a given one of the pixels so as to, in this order:

during a first period, execute a first operation to apply a low potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element is kept in non-emission state;

during a second period, execute a second operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light;

during a third period, execute a third operation to stop light emission of the light-emitting element without applying the low potential to the input terminal; and

during a fourth period, execute a fourth operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light, and

wherein the third operation is executed on the given one of the pixels at least within a given frame period in which the light-emitting element of the given one of the pixels is set to emit light.

10. The display apparatus of claim 9 ,

wherein the driver is configured to, prior to the first period of the given frame period, apply the intermediate potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element of the given one of the pixels stops light-emission for a previous frame period.

11. The display apparatus of claim 10 ,

wherein the driver is configured to, within the given frame period, subsequent to the first operation and prior to the second operation, perform a threshold correction operation for the given one of the plurality of pixels.

12. The display apparatus of claim 11 ,

wherein the driving circuit includes a driving transistor and a capacitor, and

the driver is configured to perform the threshold correction operation by supplying a current through the driving transistor to the capacitor.

13. The display apparatus of claim 9 ,

wherein the driver is configured to drive a given one of the pixels so as to execute the first, the second, the third and the fourth within the given frame period.

14. The display apparatus of claim 9 ,

wherein the driver is configured to set a potential of the input terminal of the light-emitting element via one of the power supply lines coupled to the given one of the pixels.

15. The display apparatus of claim 9 ,

wherein the third operation is executed immediately after the second operation, and the fourth operation is executed immediately after the third operation such that low potential is not applied between the beginning of the second period and the end of the fourth period.

16. The display apparatus of claim 9 ,

wherein the driving circuit includes a sampling transistor configured to sample an image signal such that the light-emitting element emits light according to the image signal,

and wherein the sampling transistor is set in non-conductive state throughout a period from the beginning of the second period to the end of the fourth period.

17. An electronic apparatus comprising:

a driver;

a driving circuit responsive to the driver; and

a light-emitting element, the driving circuit being connected to an input terminal of the light-emitting element to control a current supply,

wherein the driver is configured to drive the driving circuit, so as to, in this order:

during a first period, execute a first operation to apply a low potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element is kept in non-emission state;

during a second period, execute a second operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light;

during a third period, execute a third operation to apply an intermediate potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element stops light emission, the intermediate potential being between the low and high potentials; and

during a fourth period, execute a fourth operation to apply a high potential to the input terminal such that the light-emitting element emits light, and

wherein the third operation is executed immediately after the second operation, and the fourth operation is executed immediately after the third operation such that low potential is not applied between the beginning of the second period and the end of the fourth period.

18. The electronic apparatus of claim 17 ,

wherein the driver is configured to set a potential of the input terminal of the light-emitting element via a power supply line coupled to the driving circuit.

19. The electronic apparatus of claim 17 ,

wherein the third operation is executed immediately after the second operation, and the fourth operation is executed immediately after the third operation such that low potential is not applied between the beginning of the second period and the end of the fourth period.

20. The electronic apparatus of claim 17 ,

wherein the electronic apparatus is an apparatus selected from a group consisting of a digital camera, a notebook personal computer, a cellular phone and a video camera.
