Abstract

In an example implementation of this disclosure, a message passing low density parity check (LDPC) decoder may, during decoding of a first group of bits, lock a first variable node upon a bit-value probability of the first variable node reaching a determined threshold, and lock a first check node upon all variable nodes connected to the first check node being locked. The LDPC decoder may cease decoding the first group of bits upon all variable nodes of the LDPC decoder being locked, all check nodes of the LDPC decoder being locked, reaching a maximum number of iterations, or reaching a timeout. During a particular iteration of the decoding of the first group of bits in which the first variable node is locked, the LDPC decoder may refrain from generating a bit-value probability for the locked first variable node.

Claims (33)

during decoding of a first group of bits in a message passing low density parity check (LDPC) decoder:

locking a first variable node of said LDPC decoder upon a bit-value probability of said first variable node reaching a determined threshold;

locking a first check node of said LDPC decoder upon one or more conditions being satisfied, said one or more conditions including a condition that all variable nodes connected to said first check node are locked; and

ceasing decoding said first group of bits upon all variable nodes of said LDPC decoder being locked, all check nodes of said LDPC decoder being locked, reaching a maximum number of iterations, or reaching a timeout.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, refraining from generating a bit-value probability for said first variable node.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, refraining from passing messages from said first variable node to one or more check nodes connected to said first variable node.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first variable node is connected to said first check node and said method comprises:

during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, generating a check-to-variable message for the first check node and an unlocked variable node connected to said first check node, but refraining from generating a check-to-variable message for said first check node and said first variable node.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first variable node is connected to said first check node and said method comprises:

during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, passing a check-to-variable message for said first check node and an unlocked variable node connected to said first check node, but refraining from passing a check-to-variable message for said first check node and said first variable node.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first check node is locked, refraining from generating check-to-variable messages for said first check node.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first check node is locked, refraining from passing check-to-variable messages from said first check node to its connected variable nodes.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising unlocking said first variable node and said first check node prior to beginning decoding of a second group of bits.

9. A system comprising:

circuitry comprising a message passing low density parity check (LDPC) decoder, wherein, during decoding of a first group of bits, said circuitry is operable to:

lock a first variable node of said LDPC decoder upon a bit-value probability of said first variable node reaching a determined threshold;

lock a first check node of said LDPC decoder upon one or more conditions being satisfied, said one or more conditions including a condition that all variable nodes connected to said first check node are locked; and

cease decoding of said first group of bits upon all variable nodes of said LDPC decoder being locked, all check nodes of said LDPC decoder being locked, a maximum number of iterations being reached, or a timeout being reached.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein said circuitry is operable to, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, refrain from generation of a bit-value probability for said first variable node.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein said circuitry is operable to, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, refrain from passing of messages from said first variable node to one or more check nodes connected to said first variable node.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

said first variable node is connected to said first check node and said circuitry is operable to:

during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, generate a check-to-variable message for said first check node and an unlocked variable node connected to said first check node, but refrain from generation of a check-to-variable message for said first check node and said first variable node.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

said first variable node is connected to said first check node and said circuitry is operable to:

during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first variable node is locked, pass a check-to-variable message for said first check node and an unlocked variable node connected to said first check node, but refrain from passing of a check-to-variable message for said first check node and said first variable node.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein said circuitry is operable to, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first check node is locked, refrain from generation of check-to-variable messages for said first check node.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein said circuitry is operable to, during a particular iteration of said decoding of said first group of bits in which said first check node is locked, refrain from passing of check-to-variable messages from said first check node to its connected variable nodes.
