Abstract

Methods and systems for releasing growth factors are disclosed. In certain embodiments, a blood sample is exposed to a sequence of one or more electric pulses to trigger release of a growth factor in the sample. In certain embodiments, the growth factor release is not accompanied by clotting within the blood sample.

Claims (15)

1. A system, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable memory storing one or more processor executable routines, wherein the processor executable routines, when executed, cause a sequence of one or more electric pulses to be applied to a blood sample to trigger a release of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in the blood sample, wherein the release of ADP triggers platelet activation and clotting within the blood sample;

a current sensing circuitry configured to estimate one or more electrical properties of the blood sample, wherein at least one of the one or more processor-executable routines, when executed, generates, via the current sensing circuitry, a sensing signal indicative of at least one electrical property of the blood sample; and

a processor configured to access and execute the one or more processor executable routines stored in the computer-readable memory, wherein the at least one electrical property of the blood sample is used by the processor to parameterize the sequence of one or more electric pulses applied to the blood sample to trigger release of ADP.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood sample comprises calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) prior to having the sequence of one or more electric pulses applied.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood sample is a whole blood sample or a platelet rich plasma.

4. A system, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable memory storing one or more processor executable routines, wherein the processor executable routines, when executed, cause a sequence of one or more electric pulses to be applied to a blood sample to trigger release of a growth factor in the blood sample, wherein the sequence of one or more electric pulses do not cause clotting within the blood sample coincident with the release of the growth factor;

a current sensing circuitry configured to estimate one or more electrical properties of the blood sample, wherein at least one of the one or more processor-executable routines, when executed, generates, via the current sensing circuitry, a sensing signal indicative of at least one electrical property of the blood sample; and

a processor configured to access and execute the one or more processor executable routines stored in the computer-readable memory, wherein the at least one electrical property of the blood sample is used by the processor to parameterize the sequence of one or more electric pulses applied to the blood sample to trigger release of the growth factor.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the blood sample does not comprise calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) prior to having the sequence of one or more electric pulses applied.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the growth factor comprises platelet derived growth factor.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein the blood sample is a whole blood sample or a platelet rich plasma.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the current sensing circuitry generates the sensing signal by exposing the blood sample to an electric pulse having an electric field strength below that of the electric pulses used for platelet activation.

9. The system of claim 4 , wherein the current sensing circuitry generates the sensing signal by exposing the blood sample to an electric pulse having an electric field strength below that of the electric pulses used for platelet activation.
