Abstract

Systems and methods for deployment and retrieval of ocean bottom seismic receivers. In some embodiments, the system includes a carrier containing receivers. The carrier can include a frame having a mounted structure (e.g., a movable carousel, movable conveyor, fixed parallel rails, or a barrel) for seating and releasing the receivers (e.g., axially stacked). The structure can facilitate delivering receivers to a discharge port on the frame. The system can include a discharge mechanism for removing receivers from the carrier. In some embodiments, the method includes loading a carrier with receivers, transporting the carrier from a surface vessel to a position adjacent the seabed, and using an ROV to remove receivers from the carrier and place the receivers on the seabed. In some embodiments, an ROV adjacent the seabed engages a deployment line that guides receivers from the vessel down to the ROV for “on-time” delivery and placement on the seabed.

Claims (34)

1. A method of deploying an ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) unit on a seabed, comprising:

transporting the OBS unit from a first location above a surface of water to a second location at the seabed, the OBS unit comprising a recording device and a first wireless communication device;

providing a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) comprising a second wireless communication device;

aligning a suction mechanism of the ROV with the OBS unit;

engaging, by the suction mechanism, the OBS unit;

moving, by the ROV, the OBS unit from the second location to a third location on the seabed; and

wirelessly activating, via the second wireless communication device of the ROV, the recording device of the OBS unit via the first wireless communication device of the OBS unit to initiate recording.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein aligning the suction mechanism of the ROV with the OBS unit comprises:

aligning a surface of the suction mechanism of the ROV with the OBS unit.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

aligning an axis of the suction mechanism with the OBS unit.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

aligning the suction mechanism with an axis of the OBS unit.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

aligning an axis of the suction mechanism with an axis of the OBS unit.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

transporting the OBS units from the first location separately from the ROV.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

transporting a plurality of OBS units from the first location to the second location, each of the plurality of OBS units comprising a wireless communication device.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising:

providing a carrier;

loading the carrier with at least one of the plurality of OBS units.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

transporting, by the ROV, the OBS unit from the first location to the second location.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

loading, at or near the first location, a carrier with the OBS unit.

11. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

loading, at or near the first location, a carrier with the OBS unit; and

transporting, by the ROV, the carrier from a position at or near the first location to the second location.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the suction mechanism is coupled to a robotic arm of the ROV, comprising:

using the robotic arm to move the OBS unit from the second location to the third location on the seabed.

13. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

engaging, by the suction mechanism, a flat surface of the OBS unit.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the suction mechanism comprises a suction cup configured to engage a surface of the OBS unit.
