Abstract

A system for enabling tournament gaming provides a plurality of gaming machines and a tournament controller in communication with the gaming machines. At least a first gaming machine enables play of a first base game and at least a second gaming machine enables play of a second base game. The first base game has a first set of parameters and the second base game has a second set of parameters. The first base game with the first set of parameters is a different game theme from the second base game with the second set of parameters. The base game play data from each gaming machine is converted into a normalized tournament score that is designed to substantially equalize differences resulting from the base games that have differing sets of parameters, wherein calculation of the normalized tournament score uses monitored data spanning multiple base game plays.

Claims (61)

1. A device-enabled gaming system for enabling tournament gaming, comprising:

a physical network that connects and enables communication between components in the gaming device-enabled gaming system;

a tournament server connected to the physical network;

a plurality of gaming machines connected to the physical network, the plurality of gaming devices each comprising:

(i) at least one display device;

(ii) a plurality of input devices including:

(a) a bill acceptor that receives a first physical item associated with a first monetary value;

(b) a cashout button actuatable to enable a player to cash out winnings from game play;

(iii) an output device comprising a currency dispenser, a ticket dispenser, a physical prize dispenser, or combinations thereof that dispense currency, a paper ticket, or a physical prize, respectively;

(iv) at least one gaming device processor; and

(v) at least one gaming device memory device storing a plurality of gaming device instructions;

wherein at least a first gaming machine enables, via one or more processors, play of a first base game, wherein at least a second gaming machine enables play of a second base game, wherein the first base game has a first set of parameters and the second base game has a second set of parameters, and wherein the first base game with the first set of parameters is a different game theme from the second base game with the second set of parameters; and

one or more tournament controller devices in communication with the gaming machines and the tournament server via the physical network, each of the one or more tournament controller devices having one or more processors;

wherein base game play data from each gaming machine is converted into a normalized tournament score, via at least one of the one or more tournament controller devices, that is designed to substantially equalize differences resulting from the base games that have differing sets of parameters, wherein calculation of the normalized tournament score uses monitored data spanning multiple base game plays; wherein the monitored data includes a theoretical payout percentage

wherein calculation of the tournament score, via at least one of the one or more tournament controller devices, is determined with the theoretical payout percentage from the first and second base game, respectively, to establish player ranking.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the normalization of the tournament score includes normalizing for player wager amounts.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the normalized tournament scores are grouped and ranked.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ranked tournament scores are displayed on a player tracking display device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one highest ranked player wins a tournament prize.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of gaming machines is a portable computer that is wirelessly connected to the system.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of gaming machines is a computer that is connected to the system via the Internet.

8. A system for enabling dynamic-grouped competitive gaming, comprising:

a physical network that connects and enables communication between components in the gaming device-enabled gaming system;

a tournament server connected to the physical network;

a plurality of gaming machines connected to the physical network, the plurality of gaming devices each comprising:

(i) at least one display device;

(ii) a plurality of input devices including:

(a) a bill acceptor that receives a first physical item associated with a first monetary value;

(b) a cashout button actuatable to enable a player to cash out winnings from game play;

(iii) an output device comprising a currency dispenser, a ticket dispenser, a physical prize dispenser, or combinations thereof that dispense currency, a paper ticket, or a physical prize, respectively;

(iv) at least one gaming device processor; and

(v) at least one gaming device memory device storing a plurality of gaming device instructions;

wherein at least a first gaming machine enables, via one or more processors, play of a first base game, wherein at least a second gaming machine enables, via one or more processors, play of a second base game, wherein the first base game has a first set of parameters and the second base game has a second set of parameters, and wherein the first base game with the first set of parameters is a different game theme from the second base game with the second set of parameters; and

one or more dynamic-grouping game devices in communication with the gaming machines and the tournament server via the physical network, each of the one or more dynamic-grouping game devices having one or more processors, wherein the system enables a player to choose a dynamic-grouped competitive game to play out of a plurality of dynamic-grouped competitive games;

wherein base game play data from each gaming machine is converted into a normalized dynamic-grouped game score, via at least one of the one or more dynamic-grouping game devices, that is designed to substantially equalize differences resulting from the base games that have differing sets of parameters, wherein calculation of the normalized dynamic-grouped game score, via at least one of the one or more dynamic-grouping game devices, uses monitored data spanning multiple base game plays; wherein the monitored data includes a theoretical payout percentage

wherein calculation of the dynamic-grouped game score also is determined with the theoretical payout percentage from the first and second base game, respectively, to establish player ranking.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the normalization of the dynamic-grouped game score includes normalizing for player wager amounts.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the normalized dynamic-grouped game scores are grouped and ranked.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the plurality of gaming machines is a portable computer that is wirelessly connected to the system.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the plurality of gaming machines is a computer that is connected to the system via the Internet.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein at least one highest ranked player wins a tournament prize.

14. A system for enabling casino tournament gaming, comprising:

a physical network that connects and enables communication between components in the gaming device-enabled gaming system;

a tournament server connected to the physical network;

a plurality of gaming machines connected to the physical network, the plurality of gaming devices each comprising:

(i) at least one display device;

(ii) a plurality of input devices including:

(a) a bill acceptor that receives a first physical item associated with a first monetary value;

(b) a cashout button actuatable to enable a player to cash out winnings from game play;

(iii) an output device comprising a currency dispenser, a ticket dispenser, a physical prize dispenser, or combinations thereof that dispense currency, a paper ticket, or a physical prize, respectively;

(iv) at least one gaming device processor; and

(v) at least one gaming device memory device storing a plurality of gaming device instructions;

wherein at least a first gaming machine enables, via one or more processors, play of a first base game, wherein at least a second gaming machine enables, via one or more processors, play of a second base game, wherein the first base game has a first set of parameters and the second base game has a second set of parameters, and wherein the first base game with the first set of parameters is a different game theme from the second base game with the second set of parameters; and

one or more tournament controller devices in communication with the gaming machines and the tournament server via the physical network, each of the one or more tournament controller devices having one or more processors, wherein the system enables a player to choose a tournament game to play out of a plurality of tournament games, and wherein the system enables the player to choose when the chosen tournament game is activated for game play;

wherein each gaming machine base game play data is converted into a normalized tournament score, via at least one of the one or more tournament controller devices, that is designed to substantially equalize differences resulting from the base games that have differing sets of parameters, wherein calculation of the normalized tournament score, via at least one of the one or more tournament controller devices, uses monitored data spanning multiple base game plays; wherein the monitored data includes a theoretical payout percentage

wherein an outcome of the tournament game is determined with the theoretical payout percentage from the first and second base game, respectively, to establish player ranking.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the normalization of the tournament score includes normalizing for player wager amounts.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the normalized tournament scores are grouped and ranked.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the ranked tournament scores are displayed on a display device.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least one highest ranked player wins a tournament prize.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of gaming machines is a portable computer that is wirelessly connected to the system.
