Abstract

User data is transmitted between a mobile station ( 10 ) and a first base station ( 25 ), the user data being combined into data units, in particular packet data units, before being transmitted. For transmission of data units, transmission-specific information describing an instantaneous state of the transmission is stored in the mobile station ( 10 ) as well as in a first network unit ( 50 ) at a higher level than the first base station ( 25 ). With the relocation of the mobile station ( 10 ) from the first base station ( 25 ) to a second base station ( 30 ) having a second higher-level network unit ( 55 ), the transmission-specific information stored in the first higher-level network unit ( 50 ) is transmitted to the second higher-level network unit ( 55 ) to continue the transmission after the relocation essentially directly from its latest state.

Claims (23)

1. A method of operating a mobile station operating in a mobile wireless network wherein user data is transmitted between the mobile station and a first base station, the user data being combined into data units prior to a transmission of the data units, the network being arranged to store transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in a first network unit, the first network unit being at a level that is higher than a level of the first base station and to transmit the transmission-specific information stored in the first network unit to a second network unit of a second base station when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, the second network unit having a level that is higher than the level of the second base station to continue the transmission of the data units after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, wherein in the method the mobile station:

stores the transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units;

establishes a connection for the transmission of data units with the first base station; and

transmits first signaling information to the first network unit before or during the establishment of the connection to notify the first network unit whether the transmission-specific information will be transmitted to a new higher-level network unit when there is a relocation to a base station having a new higher-level network unit that is different from the first network unit.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data units include packet data units.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein during relocation, the transmission-specific information in the first network unit and data units intermediately stored for control purposes are transferred to the second higher level network unit.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first network unit further includes a first unit of a first convergence protocol layer, the second network unit further includes a second unit of a second convergence protocol layer, and the transmitting of the transmission-specific information includes transmitting the information via the first unit of the first convergence protocol layer to the second unit of the second convergence protocol layer when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of the transmission-specific information includes transmitting over a fixed network when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station.

A method of operating a mobile station in a mobile wireless network, wherein user data is transmitted between the mobile station and a first base station, the user data being combined into data units prior to a transmission of the data units, the network being arranged to store transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in a first network unit, the first network unit being at a level that is higher than a level of the first base station and the first network unit for transmitting the transmission-specific information stored in the first network unit to a second network unit of a second base station when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to a second base station, the second network unit having a level that is higher than the level of the second base station to continue the transmission of the data units after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, wherein control information is added to the data units before the transmission of the data units and the control information is compressed using differential coding before the transmission of the data units, wherein a first code book is stored in the first network unit for coding and decoding the control information, and the first code book is transmitted to the second network unit with the transmission-specific information, wherein in the method, the mobile station;

stores transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in the mobile station;

receives a second code book for coding and decoding the control information in the mobile station, first code book and the second code book having identical contents; and

stores a second one of the code books in the mobile station.

A method of operating a mobile station in a mobile wireless network within which user data is transmitted between the mobile station and a first base station, the user data being combined into data units prior to a transmission of the data units, the network being arranged to store transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in a first network unit, the first network unit being at a level higher than a level of the first base station and the first network unit transmitting the transmission-specific information stored in the first network unit to a second network unit of a second base station when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, the second network unit having a level that is higher than the level of the second base station to continue the transmission of the data units after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, wherein in the method, the mobile station;

stores transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in the mobile station;

transmits second signaling information from the mobile station to the first network unit before or during the relocation of the mobile station to notify the first network unit whether the transmission-specific information will be transmitted to the second network unit after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station.

A method of operating a mobile station in a mobile wireless network wherein user data is transmitted between a mobile station and a first base station, the user data being combined into data units prior to a transmission of the data units, the network being arranged to store transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in a first network unit, the first network unit being at a level higher than a level of the first base station and the first network unit transmitting the transmission-specific information stored in the first network unit to a second network unit of a second base station when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, the second network unit having a level that is higher than the level of the second base station to continue the transmission of the data units after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, wherein in the method, the mobile station;

stores transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in the mobile station;

establishes a connection for the transmission of data units to the first base station;

transmits first signaling information from the mobile station to the first network unit before or during the establishment of the connection to notify the first network unit whether the transmission-specific information will be transmitted to a new higher-level network unit when there is a relocation to a base station having a new higher-level network unit that is different from the first network unit; and

receives first signaling information from the first network unit before or during relocation of the mobile station from the first base station to the second base station to notify the mobile station whether the transmission-specific information will be transmitted to the new higher-level network unit when a relocation occurs to a base station having a new higher-level network unit which is different from the first higher-level network unit.

A method of operating a mobile station in a mobile wireless network wherein user data is transmitted between a mobile station and a first base station, the user data being combined into data units prior to a transmission of the data units, the network being arranged to store transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in a first network unit, the first network unit being at a level higher than a level of the first base station and the first network unit transmitting the transmission-specific information stores in the first network unit to a second network unit of a second base station when the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, the second network unit having a level that is higher than the level of the second base station to continue the transmission of the data units after the mobile station relocates from the first base station to the second base station, wherein in the method, the mobile station;

stores transmission-specific information related to an instantaneous state of the transmission of the data units in the mobile station; and

receives second signaling information from the first network unit before or during the relocation of the mobile station from the first base station to the second base station to notify the mobile station whether the transmission-specific information will be transmitted to the second network unit at a time of the relocation of the mobile station from the first base station to the second base station.
