Abstract

When IP telephony devices that make use of an Internet protocol (IP) based private branch exchange (PBX) service provider resister with PBX service provider, they furnish local address information that indicates how they telephony devices can be reached directly for a telephony communication. This information is provided to other telephony devices within the same business or organization. As a result, the telephony devices within a business or organization can contact one another directly to setup and conduct telephony communications, without the need for such telephony communications to pass though assets of the IP based PBX service provider.

Claims (28)

1 . A method of providing information to Internet protocol (IP) telephony devices that are associated with the same business or account, comprising:

receiving, at a registration unit of a an IP telephony system, a first registration message from a first IP telephony device;

receiving, at the registration unit, a second registration message from a second IP telephony device;

sending local address information for the second IP telephony device to the first IP telephony device when the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account, wherein the local address information enables an IP telephony communication to be directly established between the first IP telephony device and the second IP telephony device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the local address information for the second IP telephony device that is sent to the first IP telephony device comprises an IP address on a local area network to which the second IP telephony device is connected.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the local address information for the second IP telephony device that is sent to the first IP telephony device further comprises an account identifier associated with the second IP telephony device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending local address information for the first IP telephony device to the second IP telephony device, wherein the local address information for the first IP telephony device enables a telephony communication to be directly established between the second IP telephony device and the first IP telephony device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices are received by the registration unit via a public data network that connects the registration unit to the first and second IP telephony devices.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices are received by the registration unit from one or more routers that connect the registration unit to the first and second IP telephony devices.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices are received by the registration unit via the Internet.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining step comprises determining that the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account if the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices originate from the same IP address.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining step comprises determining that the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account if the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices were received by the registration unit from the same router.

11 . A system for providing information to Internet protocol (IP) telephony devices that are associated with the same business or account, comprising:

means for receiving, at a registration unit of a an IP telephony system, a first registration message from a first IP telephony device;

means for receiving, at the registration unit, a second registration message from a second IP telephony device;

means for sending local address information for the second IP telephony device to the first IP telephony device when the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account, wherein the local address information enables an IP telephony communication to be directly established between the first IP telephony device and the second IP telephony device.

12 . A system for providing information to Internet protocol (IP) telephony devices that are associated with the same business or account, comprising:

a registration unit that receives a first registration message from a first IP telephony device and a second registration message from a second IP telephony device; and

an address provision unit that sends local address information for the second IP telephony device to the first IP telephony device when the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account, wherein the local address information enables an IP telephony communication to be directly established between the first IP telephony device and the second IP telephony device.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the address provision unit sends local address information for the second IP telephony device that to the first IP telephony device that comprises an IP address on a local area network to which the second IP telephony device is connected.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the local address information for the second IP telephony device that is sent to the first IP telephony device further comprises an account identifier associated with the second IP telephony device.

15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the address provision unit also sends local address information for the first IP telephony device to the second IP telephony device, wherein the local address information for the first IP telephony device enables a telephony communication to be directly established between the second IP telephony device and the first IP telephony device.

16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the registration unit receives the registration messages from the first and second IP telephony devices via a public data network that connects the registration unit to the first and second IP telephony devices.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the registration unit receives the registration messages from first and second IP telephony devices from one or more routers that connects the registration unit to the first and second IP telephony devices.

18 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a device location unit that determines whether the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein device location unit determines that the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account if the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices originate from the same IP address.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the device location unit determines that the first and second IP telephony devices are associated with the same business or account if the registration messages received from the first and second IP telephony devices were received by the registration unit from the same router.
