Abstract

One or more frame components that each comprise 1/Xth of a 360 degree RFID tag reader antenna array can be physically coupled to one another to thereby form a multi-frame component. One or more RFID tag reader antenna mounts can comprise a part of such frame components and can be configured to aim a corresponding RFID tag reader antenna outwardly of the frame component. These teachings also accommodate disposing a plurality of RFID tag reader antenna units within a facility such that these antenna units are disposed higher than an expected location of, say, at least 90% of the RFID tags when the latter are in the facility. By one approach these antenna units can all be disposed at a substantially same height within the facility. These antenna units may, or may not, be visually concealed as desired.

Claims (42)

1. A Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag reader antenna array comprising:

a frame;

a plurality of RFID tag reader antennas implemented on the frame, wherein at least two of the RFID tag reader antennas face outwardly from the frame in non-parallel directions and wherein at least one of the RFID tag reader antennas comprises a phased-array type antenna.

2. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 1 wherein at least two of the plurality of RFID tag reader antennas face in substantially opposite directions.

3. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 1 wherein there are a sufficient number of the RFID tag reader antennas to provide 360 degrees of lateral outward coverage about the frame.

4. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 3 wherein all of the RFID tag reader antennas comprise phased-array type antennas.

5. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 1 wherein the frame is configured to be installed by being suspended from above.

6. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 5 wherein the frame is configured to be installed by being suspended from a ceiling.

7. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 5 wherein the frame is configured to be installed in a substantially horizontal orientation.

8. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 5 wherein the plurality of RFID tag reader antennas are configured to disperse emanation of radio frequency energy in multiple outward directions about and below the frame to provide a distribution of radio frequency power throughout a targeted space below the frame to read RFID tags distributed in the targeted space.

9. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 8 wherein a first group of the multiple directions is at a first pitch and a second group of the multiple directions is at a second pitch.

10. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 1 wherein the frame has a circularly-shaped periphery and wherein there are a sufficient number of the RFID tag reader antennas to provide 360 degrees of lateral coverage about the frame.

11. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 1 wherein at least two of the RFID tag reader antennas are pitched differently from one another.

12. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 11 wherein at least two different pitch angles are utilized for pitching the RFID tag reader antennas so as to provide a uniform distribution of radio frequency power throughout a targeted space.

13. A Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) reader system comprising:

a plurality of RFID tag reader antenna arrays, wherein at least two of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays each comprise:

a frame;

a plurality of RFID tag reader antennas implemented on the frame, wherein at least two of the RFID tag reader antennas face outwardly of the frame in non-parallel directions and wherein at least one of the RFID tag reader antennas comprises a phased-array type antenna.

14. The RFID reader system of claim 13 wherein at least two of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays are installed such that their respective reading coverage areas overlap at least in part.

15. The RFID reader system of claim 13 wherein all of the RFID tag reader antennas for all of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays comprise phased-array type antennas.

16. The RFID reader system of claim 15 wherein there are a sufficient number of the RFID tag reader antennas for each of the at least two of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays to provide 360 degrees of outward lateral coverage about each such RFID tag reader antenna array.

17. The RFID reader system of claim 16 wherein each of the at least two of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays is installed in a substantially horizontal orientation.

18. The RFID reader system of claim 17 wherein each of the at least two of the RFID tag reader antenna arrays is installed by being suspended from above.

19. A Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag reader antenna array comprising:

a frame;

a plurality of RFID tag reader antennas implemented on the frame, wherein:

at least two of the RFID tag reader antennas face outwardly of the frame in non-parallel directions;

and at least two of the RFID tag reader antennas are pitched differently from one another;

wherein at least one of the RFID tag reader antennas comprises a phased-array type antenna.

20. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 19 wherein the frame is configured to be suspended from a ceiling.

21. The RFID tag reader antenna array of claim 20 wherein there are a sufficient number of the RFID tag reader antennas to provide 360 degrees of outward lateral coverage about the frame.

22. A Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) system comprising:

a first RFID tag reader antenna array comprising:

a frame suspended above an RFID coverage area; and

a plurality of RFID tag reader antennas implemented on the frame and which are configured to disperse emanation of radio frequency energy in multiple directions about and below the frame to provide a distribution of radio frequency power throughout a targeted space below the frame to read RFID tags distributed in the targeted space, wherein at least one of the RFID tag reader antennas comprises a phased-array type antenna.

23. The Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) system of claim 22 wherein the distribution of the radio frequency power throughout the targeted space comprises a substantially uniform distribution.
