Abstract

Apparatus and method are disclosed for providing AC line power to lighting devices such as light emitting diodes (“LEDs”). A representative apparatus comprises: a plurality of LEDs couplable to form a plurality of segments of LEDs; a current sensor; and a controller to monitor a current level through an overall series LED current path, and to provide for first or second segments of LEDs to be in or out of the overall series LED current path at different current levels. The controller is configured to, in a first light emitting diode configuration, cause first and second segments of LEDs to be parallel to one another and in the overall series LED current path. The controller is further configured to, in a second light emitting diode configuration, cause first and second segments of light emitting diodes to be coupled in series and in the overall series light emitting diode current path.

Claims (84)

1. An apparatus for providing power to a plurality of light emitting diodes couplable to receive an AC voltage, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes is couplable to form a plurality of segments of light emitting diodes, each segment comprising one or more light emitting diodes, the apparatus comprising:

a controller configured to monitor a current level through the overall series light emitting diode current path using a current sensor, wherein the controller is further configured to selectively include:

a first segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes in an overall series light emitting diode current path; and

a second segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes in the overall series light emitting diode current path,

wherein, during at least one of a first part and a second part of an AC voltage interval of the received AC voltage, the controller is further configured to:

in a first light emitting diode configuration, cause:

one of the first or second segments to be coupled in series in a first series light emitting diode current path;

the other of the first or second segments to be coupled in series in a second series light emitting diode current path; and

the first series light emitting diode current path and the second series light emitting diode current path to be parallel to one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path;

in a second light emitting diode configuration, cause:

the first and second segments to be coupled in series in a third series light emitting diode current path; and

the third series light emitting diode current path to be in the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

in a third light emitting diode configuration, cause:

one of the first or second segments to be in one of the first or second series light emitting diode current paths and in the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

the other of the first or second segments to be out of the overall series light emitting diode current path.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first current regulator coupled to the first segment and the controller; and

a second current regulator coupled to the second segment and the controller,

wherein the controller is further configured to provide for the first, second, and third light emitting diode configurations by respectively turning on or off the first current regulator and turning on or off the second current regulator.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in response to an increasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the first part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to provide for the first light emitting diode configuration.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein, in response to a further increasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the first part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to provide for the second light emitting diode configuration.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in response to a decreasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the second part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to provide for the second light emitting diode configuration.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein, in response to a further decreasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the second part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to provide for the third light emitting diode configuration.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to provide for the first, second, and third light emitting diode configurations in an order during the first part of the AC voltage interval, and wherein the order is, as a voltage level of the received AC voltage increases in the first part of the AC voltage interval, the third light emitting diode configuration, the first light emitting diode configuration, and then the second light emitting diode configuration.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to provide for the first, second, and third light emitting diode configurations in an order during the second part of the AC voltage interval, and wherein the order is, as a voltage level of the received AC voltage decreases in the second part of the AC voltage interval, the second light emitting diode configuration, the first light emitting diode configuration, and then the third light emitting diode configuration.

9. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first current regulator and the second current regulator each comprise a transistor.

10. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first current regulator and the second current regulator each comprise an operational amplifier coupled to a transistor.

11. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to control or set the first current regulator at about a first predetermined current level and control or set the second current regulator at about a second predetermined current level.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a third segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes in the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

a fourth segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes in the overall series light emitting diode current path,

wherein, during the at least one of a first part and a second part of an AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to:

in a fourth light emitting diode configuration, cause:

three of the first, second, third, and fourth segments of light emitting diodes to be coupled in series with one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

the other one of the first, second, third, and fourth segments of light emitting diodes to be excluded from the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

in a fifth light emitting diode configuration, cause:

the first, second, third, and fourth segments of light emitting diodes to be coupled in series with one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

monitor a current level through the overall series light emitting diode current path using the current sensor;

provide for the first light emitting diode configuration in response to the monitored current level being at about a first predetermined current level or until the monitored current level has reached about the first predetermined current level;

provide for the second light emitting diode configuration in response to the monitored current level being at about a second predetermined current level or until the monitored current level has reached about the second predetermined current level;

provide for the third light emitting diode configuration in response to the monitored current level being at about a third predetermined current level or until the monitored current level has reached about the third predetermined current level;

provide for the fourth light emitting diode configuration in response to the monitored current level being at about a fourth predetermined current level or until the monitored current level has reached about the fourth predetermined current level; and

provide for the fifth light emitting diode configuration in response to the monitored current level being at about a fifth predetermined current level or until the monitored current level has reached about the fifth predetermined current level.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a voltage regulator, wherein the voltage regulator is configured to be charged during a peak interval of the AC voltage.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the voltage regulator is configured to provide a voltage or a current that is sufficient for a light emitting diode to be on and conducting during a zero-crossing interval of the AC voltage.

A method of providing power to a plurality of light emitting diodes couplable to receive an AC voltage having a first part and a second part of an AC voltage interval, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes is couplable to form a plurality of segments of light emitting diodes, each segment comprising one or more light emitting diodes, the method comprising:

causing a first segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes to be in or out of an overall series light emitting diode current path in response to a voltage level of the received AC voltage;

causing a second segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes to be in or out of the overall series light emitting diode current path in response to the voltage level of the received AC voltage;

causing a third segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes to be in or out of the overall series light emitting diode current path in response to the voltage level of the received AC voltage;

causing a fourth segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes to be in or out of the overall series light emitting diode current path in response to the voltage level of the received AC voltage; and

during at least one of the first part and the second part of the AC voltage interval of the received AC voltage:

in a first light emitting diode configuration, causing:

one of the first or second segments to be coupled in series in a first series light emitting diode current path;

the other of the first or second segments to be coupled in series in a second series light emitting diode current path; and

the first series light emitting diode current path and the second series light emitting diode current path to be parallel to one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path;

in a second light emitting diode configuration, causing:

the first and second segments to be coupled in series in a third series light emitting diode current path; and

the third series light emitting diode current path to be in the overall series light emitting diode current path;

in a third light emitting diode configuration, causing:

three of the first, second, third, and fourth segments to be coupled in series with one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

the other one of the first, second, third, and fourth segments to be out of the overall series light emitting diode current path; and

in a fourth light emitting diode configuration, causing:

the first, second, third, and fourth segments to be coupled in series with one another in the overall series light emitting diode current path.

The method of claim 16 , wherein the first, second, third, and fourth light emitting diode configurations are provided in a first order during the first part of the AC voltage interval and in a second order during the second part of the AC voltage interval, and wherein the second order is a reverse of the first order.

The method of claim 16 , further comprising providing the second light emitting diode configuration in response to an increasing voltage level during the first part of the AC voltage interval, providing the third light emitting diode configuration in response to a further increasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the first part of the AC voltage interval, and providing the fourth light emitting diode configuration in response to a further increasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the first part of the AC voltage interval.

The method of claim 16 , further comprising providing the third light emitting diode configuration in response to a decreasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the second part of the AC voltage interval, providing the second light emitting diode configuration in response to a further decreasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the second part of the AC voltage interval, and providing the first light emitting diode configuration in response to a further decreasing voltage level of the received AC voltage during the second part of the AC voltage interval.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising regulating a current level of the overall series light emitting diode current path to be less than or equal to a maximum current level.

21. An apparatus for providing power to a plurality of light emitting diodes couplable to receive an AC voltage, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes is couplable to form a plurality of segments of light emitting diodes, each segment comprising one or more light emitting diodes, and wherein the apparatus is couplable to a current sensor, the apparatus comprising:

a first current regulator couplable to one of a first, a second, a third, or a fourth segment of light emitting diodes from the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes;

a second current regulator couplable to another of the first, second, third, or fourth segments;

a controller coupled to the first and second current regulators and couplable to the current sensor;

one or more switches, wherein each switch of the one or more switches is coupled to at least one of the first, second, third, or fourth segments and coupled to the controller,

wherein the controller is configured to:

monitor a current level through an overall series light emitting diode current path;

cause the first segment to be in or out of the overall series light emitting diode current path in response to the current level being at about a first predetermined current level or until the current level has reached about the first predetermined current level; and

cause the second segment to be in or out of the overall series light emitting diode current path in response to the current level being at about a second predetermined current level or until the current level has reached about the second predetermined current level,

wherein during a first part of an AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to:

provide for the first segment to be in a first series light emitting diode current path; and

provide for the second segment to be in a second series light emitting diode current path in parallel with the first segment, and

wherein, in response to an increasing voltage level during the first part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to cause the first, second, and third segments to be in series with one another and to be in the overall series light emitting diode current path.

The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein, in response to a further increasing voltage level during the first part of the AC voltage interval, the controller is further configured to cause the first, second, third, and fourth segments to be coupled in series with one another and to be in the overall series light emitting diode current path.

23. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

in response to a decreasing voltage level during a second part of the AC voltage interval, cause the second segment to be in parallel with the first segment and to be in the overall series light emitting diodes current path; and

in response to a further decreasing voltage level during the second part of the AC voltage interval, cause the third and fourth segments to be out of the overall series light emitting diode current path.
