Abstract

A collapsible valve for use in a needleless access connector to reduce the priming volume of the needleless access connector. A needleless access connector with a small priming volume. A method of connecting a first medical device to a second medical device with a needleless access connector with a small priming volume.

Claims (37)

1. A needleless access connector comprising:

a housing; and

a collapsible valve disposed in the housing, the collapsible valve having a valve axial length of from 0.62 to 0.82 inches and comprising:

a first portion with at least one arcuate cut on an outer surface thereof and comprising a first axial length from 0.22 to 0.28 inches; and

a second portion coupled to the first portion, the second portion comprising a second axial length from 30% to 66% of the valve axial length,

wherein the collapsible valve is configured to provide positive displacement when actuated, and wherein the housing and collapsible valve are configured to provide positive displacement and a priming volume of from 0.17 to 0.19 milliliters.

2. The needleless access connector of claim 1 , wherein the second axial length is about 56% of the valve axial length.

3. The needleless access connector of claim 1 , wherein the priming volume is about 0.175 milliliters.

4. A needleless access connector comprising:

a housing; and

a collapsible valve disposed in the housing, the collapsible valve having a valve axial length of from 0.62 to 0.82 inches and comprising:

a first portion with at least one arcuate cut on an outer surface thereof and comprising a first axial length from 0.22 to 0.28 inches; and

a second portion coupled to the first portion, the second portion comprising a second axial length from 30% to 66% of the valve axial length and an outside surface that is annular over the entire second axial length;

wherein the collapsible valve is configured to provide positive displacement when actuated, and wherein the housing and collapsible valve are configured to provide positive displacement and a priming volume of from 0.17 to 0.19 milliliters.

5. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the second axial length is about 56% of the valve axial length.

6. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises:

a male fitting at one end; and

a female fitting at the other end.

7. The needleless access connector of claim 6 , wherein the male and female fittings comprise luer fittings.

8. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the priming volume is about 0.175 milliliters.

9. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the second portion does not comprise a smiley cut or duckbills along an outside surface.

10. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises a material selected from the list consisting of: polycarbonate, polystyrene, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

11. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises channels adapted to allow fluid to flow through them when the collapsible valve is collapsed.

12. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein the collapsible valve comprises silicone rubber.

13. The needleless access connector of claim 4 , wherein:

the housing comprises an opening;

the first portion comprises an end that, when the collapsible valve is in an uncollapsed state, extends into the opening;

the end of the first portion has a first diameter; and

an outside surface of the second portion has a second diameter than is larger than the first diameter.

14. A needleless access connector comprising:

a housing; and

a collapsible valve disposed in the housing, the collapsible valve having a valve axial length of from 0.62 to 0.82 inches and comprising:

a first portion with at least one arcuate cut on an outer surface thereof and comprising a first axial length from 0.22 to 0.28 inches; and

a second portion coupled to the first portion, the second portion comprising a second axial length of about 56% of the valve axial length and an outside surface that is annular over the entire second axial length,

wherein the collapsible valve is configured to provide positive displacement when actuated, and wherein the housing and collapsible valve are configured to provide positive displacement and a priming volume of about 0.175 milliliters.

15. The needleless access connector of claim 14 , wherein the priming volume is from 0.17 to 0.19 milliliters.

16. The needleless access connector of claim 14 , wherein the collapsible valve comprises silicone rubber.
