Abstract

According to one embodiment, a non-transitory computer readable medium is described that comprises instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, cause dynamic determination of one or more transmission parameters for transmitting a particular network packet of a plurality of network packets. The transmission parameters are determined based on (a) a classification associated with the particular network packet and (b) one or more current conditions. Subsequent to this determination, the particular network packet is transmitted using the one or more transmission parameters.

Claims (55)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, causes the one or more hardware processors to:

obtain a plurality of network packets and a corresponding classification associated with each of the plurality of network packets, wherein the network packets in at least a subset of the plurality of network packets are classified as being one of an I-frame, a P-frame, and a B-frame of a media stream;

identify a current condition associated with a network over which the plurality of network packets are being transmitted, wherein the current condition comprises an error rate associated with transmitted network packets of the plurality of network packets;

for each particular network packet of the plurality of network packets:

dynamically determine one or more transmission parameters for transmitting the particular network packet based on the classification associated with the particular network packet, and the current condition; and

transmit the particular network packet using the one or more dynamically determined transmission parameters.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the current condition:

comprises an amount of time left for transmitting the plurality of network packets; and

indicates a level of congestion of a network on which the plurality of network packets are to be transmitted.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more current conditions indicate one of:

that a level of congestion is expected to decrease or that a load at a particular device is expected to decrease; and

that a level of congestion is expected to increase or that a load at a particular device is expected to increase.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the current condition indicates an operating state associated with a network propagating the network packets.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise a data transmission rate.

6. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise one or more of: Arbitration Inter-Frame Spacing (AIFS), Minimum Contention Window, Maximum Contention Window, or Maximum Burst Size.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise at least one of:

a number of retries for transmitting the particular network packet; and

a transmission power for transmitting the particular network packet.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise inter-frame spacing.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the classification associated with the particular network packet includes a priority level for the network packet.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein network packets corresponding to a same frame are identically classified.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the classification associated with the particular network packet includes a priority level for the network packet.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise a number of retries for transmitting the particular network packet.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the one or more hardware processors to:

partition the plurality of network packets of the media stream into a plurality of subsets, wherein the subsets correspond to one of an I-frame, a P-frame, and a B-frame of the media stream; and

classify the plurality of network packets to have one of a plurality of priority levels corresponding to whether the network packet is an I-frame, a P-frame, or a B-frame of the media stream.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the one or more hardware processors to classify the plurality of network packets to have one of the plurality of priority levels based on at least one of:

a distance of a particular media frame corresponding to the network packet from a following I-frame or a previous I-frame;

a presentation to which a particular media frame corresponding to the network packet belongs;

a bandwidth associated with the presentation;

a time or time period associated with a particular subset of media frames corresponding to the network packets;

whether there are other media frames, in a plurality of media frames, that duplicate the data in the particular media frame; and

whether there are other media frames, in a plurality of media frames, such that proper decoding of information contained within the other media frames depend on data in a particular media frame.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the one or more hardware processors to:

apply a transmission parameter that results in a drop of a plurality of the network packets having a lower priority level in response to a determination that a plurality of network packets are to be dropped based upon the current condition.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, causes the one or more hardware processors to:

partition a plurality of network packets of a media stream into a plurality of subsets, wherein the subsets correspond to one of an I-frame, a P-frame, and a B-frame of the media stream;

identify a priority level for each of the plurality of network packets, wherein each of the plurality of network packets is assigned one of a plurality of priority levels corresponding to whether the network packet is an I-frame, a P-frame, or a B-frame of the media stream;

identify a current condition associated with a network over which the plurality of network packets are being transmitted, wherein the current condition comprises an error rate associated with transmitted network packets of the plurality of network packets;

for a first network packet of the plurality of network packets:

dynamically determine one or more transmission parameters for transmitting the first network packet based on the priority level associated with the first network packet, and the current condition, and

transmit the first network packet using the one or more dynamically determined transmission parameters.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the current condition comprises an amount of time left for transmitting the plurality of network packets.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more transmission parameters comprise a data transmission rate.

19. A method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of network packets and a corresponding classification associated with each of the plurality of network packets, wherein the network packets in at least a subset of the plurality of network packets are classified as being one of an I-frame, a P-frame, and a B-frame of a media stream;

identifying a current condition associated with a network over which the plurality of network packets are being transmitted, wherein the current condition:

indicates that a network condition is expected to change; and

identifies a network device for removal from the network;

for each particular network packet of the plurality of network packets:

dynamically determining one or more transmission parameters for transmitting the particular network packet based on the classification associated with the particular network packet and the current condition; and

transmitting the particular network packet using the one or more dynamically determined transmission parameters.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

partitioning the plurality of network packets of the media stream into a plurality of subsets, wherein the subsets correspond to one of an I-frame, a P-frame, and a B-frame of the media stream; and

classifying the plurality of network packets to have one of a plurality of priority levels corresponding to whether the network packet is an I-frame, a P-frame, or a B-frame of the media stream.
