Abstract

A carton blank may be formed having at least one score line therein. A second layer of material may overlay at least a portion of the first layer, including the score line, thus defining an overlaid score area. The overlaid score area may include at least a portion in which the second layer is not adhered to the first layer.

Claims (29)

1. A carton comprising:

an outer layer comprising a first panel foldably connected to a second panel along a first score line, a third panel foldably connected to the second panel along a second score line, a plurality of top flap panels, and a plurality of bottom flap panels, at least the first panel, the second panel, and the third panel extending at least partially around an interior of the carton;

an inner layer of material disposed in the interior of the carton;

the inner layer of material being adhered to at least a portion of each of the first panel, the second panel, and the third panel and to at least two adhered portions of each of the first score line and the second score line;

the inner layer of material being unadhered to a first area of the outer layer and a second area of the outer layer, the first area of the outer layer comprising a first non-adhered portion of the first score line and portions of the first panel and the second panel extending along the first non-adhered portion, and the second area of the outer layer comprising a second non-adhered portion of the second score line and portions of the second panel and the third panel extending along the second non-adhered portion, wherein the first area of the outer layer has a first edge extending on the second panel, the second area of the outer layer has a second edge extending on the second panel, the first area of the outer layer and the first edge are spaced apart from the second score line, and the second area of the outer layer and the second edge are spaced apart from each of the first score line, the first area, and the first edge;

the inner layer of material is adhered to at least a portion of the second panel extending from the first edge of the first area of the outer layer adjacent the first score line to the second edge of the second area of the outer layer adjacent the second score line.

2. The carton of claim 1 wherein the first non-adhered portion and the second non-adhered portion extends between the two adhered portions of the respective first score line and second score line.

3. The carton of claim 2 wherein each of the first non-adhered portion and the second non-adhered portion is located along a length of the respective first score line and second score line.

4. The carton of claim 2 wherein the two adhered portions of the first score line and the second score line are respectively adjacent at least one top flap of the plurality of top flaps and at least one bottom flap of the plurality of bottom flaps.

5. The carton of claim 1 wherein the inner layer of material defines a first overlaid score area of the outer layer and a second overlaid score area of the outer layer, the first overlaid score area overlies the first score line, and the second overlaid score area overlies the second score line.

6. The carton of claim 5 wherein the two adhered portions are distinct from one another for each of the first score line and the second score line.

7. The carton of claim 6 wherein the first non-adhered portion is located between the two adhered portions along the first overlaid score area of the first score line, and the second non-adhered portion is located between the two adhered portions along the second overlaid score area of the second score line.

8. The carton of claim 1 wherein the outer layer and the inner layer are folded about at least the first score line and the second score line.

9. The carton of claim 1 wherein the two adhered portions are distinct from one another for each of the first score line and the second score line.

10. The carton of claim 1 wherein the outer layer of material has a first thickness, the inner layer of material has a second thickness, the second thickness being less than the first thickness.

11. The carton of claim 1 wherein the two adhered portions of the first score line and the second score line are spaced apart from the plurality of top flaps and the plurality of bottom flaps.

12. The carton of claim 1 , wherein the inner layer is adhered to the first panel, the second panel, the third panel, and the two portions of each of the first score line and the second score line by a continuous adhesive pattern.

13. The carton of claim 12 , wherein the adhesive pattern substantially covers the second panel between the first area of the outer layer and the second area of the outer layer.

14. The carton of claim 1 , wherein the first score line and the second score line each has a first width, the first area of the outer layer and the second area of the outer layer each has a second width, and the second width is greater than the first width.

15. The carton of claim 1 , wherein the first area of the outer layer is spaced apart from the second score line by a majority of the second panel and the second area of the outer layer is spaced apart from the first score line by a majority of the second panel.

16. A carton comprising:

an outer layer comprising a first panel foldably connected to a second panel along a first score line, a third panel foldably connected to the second panel along a second score line, a plurality of top flap panels, and a plurality of bottom flap panels, at least the first panel, the second panel, and the third panel extending at least partially around an interior of the carton;

an inner layer of material disposed in the interior of the carton;

the inner layer of material being adhered to at least a portion of each of the first panel, the second panel, and the third panel and to at least two adhered portions of each of the first score line and the second score line;

the inner layer of material being unadhered to a first area of the outer layer and a second area of the outer layer, the first area of the outer layer comprising a first non-adhered portion of the first score line and portions of the first panel and the second panel extending along the first non-adhered portion, and the second area of the outer layer comprising a second non-adhered portion of the second score line and portions of the second panel and the third panel extending along the second non-adhered portion;

the inner layer of material is adhered to at least a portion of the second panel extending from the first area of the outer layer adjacent the first score line to the second area of the outer layer adjacent the second score line, wherein the first area of the outer layer has a first edge extending on the second panel, the second area of the outer layer has a second edge extending on the second panel, the first edge and the second edge are parallel to the respective first score line and the second score line, and the inner layer of material is adhered to at least the portion of the second panel extending from the first edge of the first area of the outer layer to the second edge of the second area of the outer layer.

17. The carton of claim 16 , wherein the inner layer is adhered to the second panel along the first edge and along the second edge.

18. The carton of claim 16 , wherein the first edge is spaced apart from the first score line by a first distance, the second edge is spaced apart from the second score line by a second distance, and the first edge and the second edge are spaced apart from one another by a third distance that is greater than the first distance and the second distance.

19. The carton of claim 16 , wherein the first edge and the second edge are spaced apart from one another by a majority of the second panel.
