Abstract

Some embodiments relate to a luer connector comprising a housing having a hollow bore therethrough, a first end, and a second end, a male luer tip supported by the housing configured to rotate with respect to the housing, the luer tip having a first open end and a passageway through the luer tip in fluid communication with the first open end, and a substantially rigid internal member extending into the passageway of the luer tip toward the first open end of the luer tip. In some embodiments, at least one of the luer tip and the internal member can be axially moveable between a first closed position and a second open position relative to the other of the luer tip and the internal member. Further, the luer tip and the internal member can cooperate such that rotation of the luer tip in a first direction relative to the housing increases an axial displacement between the first open end of the luer tip and an end portion of the internal member.

Claims (21)

1. A luer connector comprising:

a housing having a hollow bore, a first end, and a second end;

a male luer tip supported by the housing configured to rotate with respect to the housing, the male luer tip having an opening in a first end thereof and a passageway through the male luer tip in fluid communication with the opening in the first end thereof; and

an internal member extending into the passageway of the male luer tip toward the opening in the first end thereof, the internal member having an opening in a first end thereof and a passageway through the internal member in fluid communication with the opening in the first end thereof;

wherein:

the male luer tip is rotatable between a first position and a second position relative to the internal member;

in the first position, the opening in the first end of the male luer tip is substantially offset with respect to the opening in the first end of the internal member so as to substantially prevent a flow of fluid through the male luer tip; and

in the second position, the opening in the first end of the male luer tip is substantially aligned with respect to the opening in the first end of the internal member so that fluid is permitted to flow through the male luer tip.

2. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the male luer tip is configured to rotate in a first direction with respect to the housing from the first position to the second position as a female connector is threadedly connected to the luer connector.

3. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the male luer tip is configured to rotate in a second direction with respect to the housing from the second position to the first position as a female connector is threadedly disconnected from the luer connector.

4. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member is rotationally fixed relative to the housing.

5. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member comprises an axial opening through at least a portion of the internal member, the axial opening being in fluid communication with the opening in the first end of the internal member.

6. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the luer tip is biased toward the first position.

7. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the male luer tip has a conically shaped outside surface.

8. The luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the luer connector is configured such that the male luer tip is prevented from rotating beyond the first or the second position.

9. A medical connector, comprising:

a substantially rigid housing having a first end and a second end, said first and second ends being connected by a selectively closable fluid passageway;

said first end including a hollow male luer with an inner surface, a first open end, and a second base end;

a first valve member supported substantially within the housing, the first valve member being configured to selectively seal an opening adjacent to the first end of the housing at the tip of the male luer when the connector is in a closed position;

wherein the first valve member is formed with a single strut member extending axially along at least a portion of the valve member and displaced from the valve member, said strut member extending through an opening in the housing and including a sealing member such that said strut member is configured to sealingly engage said housing as said strut member moves axially through said opening; and

an internal chamber within the housing and extending outside the male luer, the chamber being fluidly coupled with at least a portion of the hollow male luer, the chamber having a first volume in the connector closed position and a second volume smaller than the first volume when the connector is in an open position.
