Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention provides a switch system. The switch includes one or more ports on the switch configured to transmit packets encapsulated based on a first protocol. The switch further includes a control mechanism. During operation, the control mechanism forms a logical switch based on a second protocol, receives an automatically assigned identifier for the logical switch without requiring manual configuration of the identifier, and joins a virtual cluster switch.

Claims (51)

1. A switch, comprising:

forwarding circuitry configured to determine an output port for a packet encapsulated based on an encapsulation protocol, wherein an egress switch identifier of the encapsulated packet identifies a remote switch in a network of interconnected switches, wherein the encapsulation protocol allows forwarding in a routed network, and wherein the packet is encapsulated in a header forwardable in the routed network; and

control circuitry configured to:

maintaining a membership in the network of interconnected switches, wherein the network of interconnected switches is identified by a fabric identifier, and wherein the fabric identifier is distinct from a switch identifier identifying a respective switch in the network of interconnected switches;

determine that the fabric identifier is assigned to the switch in response to the switch being a member of the network of interconnected switches, wherein the assigned fabric identifier indicates that the switch has joined the network.

2. The switch of claim 1 ,

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to apply a configuration associated with the network of interconnected switches to the switch.

3. The switch of claim 1 , wherein the encapsulation protocol is based on an Ethernet protocol.

4. The switch of claim 1 , wherein the encapsulation protocol is based on one of:

a Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) protocol, and wherein the packet is encapsulated in a TRILL header; and

an Internet Protocol (IP), and wherein the packet is encapsulated in an IP header.

5. The switch of claim 1 , wherein the network of interconnected switches operates as one or more of:

a Fibre Channel (FC) switch; and

an Ethernet switch.

6. The switch of claim 5 , wherein the fabric identifier is assigned to the remote switch.

7. The switch of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to maintain a copy of configuration information for the network of interconnected switches, wherein the configuration information includes the fabric identifier.

8. The switch of claim 7 , wherein the configuration information for the network of interconnected switches comprises a number of switch identifiers assigned to the switches in the network of interconnected switches.

9. The switch of claim 1 , further comprising media access control (MAC) learning circuitry configured to:

learn a source MAC address of an ingress packet from a local port; and

construct for the remote switch a control message comprising the learned MAC address and information associated with the port.

10. The switch of claim 1 , further comprising forwarding circuitry configured to query a MAC address learning service for the network of interconnected switches based on a received packet's destination MAC address prior to forwarding the received packet.

11. A switching system, comprising:

a plurality of switches configured to transport packets using a first protocol; wherein the switching system is identified by a fabric identifier identifying the switching system, wherein the first protocol allows forwarding in a routed network, and wherein the packets are encapsulated in headers forwardable in the routed network; and

control-circuitry residing on a respective switch;

wherein the control module is configured to:

maintain a membership in the switching system;

determine that the fabric identifier is assigned to a switch in response to the switch being a member of the switching system,

wherein the assigned-fabric identifier indicates that the switch has joined the switching system, and wherein the fabric identifier is distinct from a switch identifier identifying a respective switch in the switching system.

12. The switching system of claim 11 , wherein a respective switch in the plurality of switches is configured with an identifier identifying the switch within the switching system.

13. The switching system of claim 11 ,

wherein the switching system is a logical Fibre Channel (FC) switch; and

wherein the identifier is an FC switch domain ID.

14. The switching system of claim 11 ,

wherein a packet is transported between the plurality of switches based on one or more of:

a Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) protocol, wherein the packet is encapsulated in a TRILL header; and

an Internet Protocol (IP), and wherein the packet is encapsulated in an IP header.

15. The switching system of claim 11 , wherein a respective switch in the plurality of switches maintains a copy of configuration information of all the switches in the switching system.

16. The switching system of claim 11 , further comprising a media access control (MAC) address learning service which maintains records of MAC addresses learned by a respective switch in the plurality of switches.

17. A method, comprising:

determining an output port for a packet encapsulated based on an encapsulation protocol, wherein an egress switch identifier of the encapsulated packet identifies a remote switch in a network of interconnected switches, wherein the encapsulation protocol allows forwarding in a routed network, and wherein the packet is encapsulated in a header forwardable in the routed network;

maintaining a membership in the network of interconnected switches, wherein the network of interconnected switches is identified by a fabric identifier, and wherein the fabric identifier is distinct from a switch identifier identifying a respective switch in the network of interconnected switches;

determine that the fabric identifier is assigned to a switch in the network of interconnected switches in response to the switch being a member of the network of interconnected switches, wherein the assigned fabric identifier indicates that the switch has joined the network of interconnected switches.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising maintaining a copy of configuration information for the network of interconnected switches at the switch.

19. A switch means, comprising:

a communication means for determining an output port for a packet encapsulated based on an encapsulation protocol, wherein an egress switch identifier of the encapsulated packet identifies a remote switch means in a network of interconnected switch means, wherein the encapsulation protocol allows forwarding in a routed network, and wherein the packet is encapsulated in a header forwardable in the routed network; and
