Abstract

A storage system connected to a computer and a management computer, includes storage devices accessed by the computer, and a control unit for controlling the storage devices. A first-type logical device corresponding to a storage area set in at least one of the storage devices and a second-type logical device that is a virtual storage area are provided. The control unit sets at least two of the first-type logical devices different in a characteristic as storage areas included in a storage pool through mapping. The first-type logical device stores data by allocating a storage area of the second-type logical device to a storage area of the first-type logical device mapped to the storage pool. The characteristic of the second-type logical device can be changed by changing the allocated storage area of the second-type logical device to a storage area of another first-type logical device.

Claims (25)

1. A storage system coupled to an external storage system, the storage system comprising:

a plurality of internal storage devices;

a control unit configured to manage a virtual volume including a plurality of virtual storage areas, and manage a first pool including a plurality of first real storage areas formed by the plurality of internal storage devices and a second pool including a plurality of second real storage areas provided by the external storage system, the second pool being managed as lower performance than the first pool, and

wherein the control unit is configured to:

allocate a first real storage area of the first pool to a first virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a first write request to the first virtual storage area,

allocate a second real storage area of the second pool to a second virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a second write request to the second virtual storage area, and

allocate a third real storage area of the second pool to the first virtual storage area of the virtual volume, on the basis of an access frequency of the data related to the first virtual storage area, so that the data stored in the first real storage area is migrated to the third real storage area of the second pool.

2. The storage system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the control unit is configured to monitor the access frequency of the data stored in the first real storage area of the first pool.

3. The storage system according to claim 1 ,

wherein when the access frequency of the data stored in the first real storage area of the first pool decreases, the control unit is configured to execute a migration of the data stored in the first real storage area of the first pool to the third real storage area of the second pool, if necessary.

4. The storage system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the control unit is configured to execute a migration of the data stored in the first real storage area of the first pool to the third real storage area of the second pool, on the basis of the access frequency of the data stored in the first real storage area of the first pool and utilization status for each of the first pool and the second pool.

5. A method for a storage system coupled to an external storage system, the storage system comprising:

a plurality of internal storage devices; and

a control unit configured to manage a virtual volume including a plurality of virtual storage areas, and manage a first pool including a plurality of first real storage areas formed by the plurality of internal storage devices and a second pool including a plurality of second real storage areas provided by the external storage system, the second pool being managed as lower performance than the first pool, and

the method comprising the steps of:

allocating a first real storage area of the first pool to a first virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a first write request to the first virtual storage area,

allocating a second real storage area of the second pool to a second virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a second write request to the second virtual storage area, and

allocating a third real storage area of the second pool to the first virtual storage area of the virtual volume on the basis of an access frequency of the data related to the first virtual storage area, so that the data stored in the first real storage area is migrated to the third real storage area of the second pool.

6. A storage system coupled to an external storage system, the storage system comprising:

a plurality of internal storage devices; and

a processor connected to a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

manage a virtual volume including a plurality of virtual storage areas, and manage a first pool including a plurality of first real storage areas formed by the plurality of internal storage devices and a second pool including a plurality of second real storage areas provided by the external storage system, the second pool being managed as lower performance than the first pool, allocate a first real storage area of the first pool to a first virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a first write request to the first virtual storage area, allocate a second real storage area of the second pool to a second virtual storage area in the virtual volume for storing data related to a second write request to the second virtual storage area, and

allocate a third real storage area of the second pool to the first virtual storage area of the virtual volume on the basis of an access frequency of the data related to the first virtual storage area, so that the data stored in the first real storage area is migrated to the third real storage area of the second pool.
