Abstract

A cathode active material capable of increasing a capacity and improving high temperature characteristics or cycle characteristics, a method of manufacturing it, a cathode using the cathode active material, and a battery using the cathode active material are provided. In a cathode active material contained in a cathode, a coating layer is provided on at least part of complex oxide particle containing at least lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co). The coating layer is an oxide which contains lithium (Li) and at least one of nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn).

Claims (35)

1. A cathode active material comprising:

a complex oxide particle comprising an oxide containing at least lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co); and

a coating layer which is provided on at least part of the complex oxide particle and is made of an oxide containing lithium and at least one of nickel and manganese,

wherein a concentration of manganese in an outer portion of the coating layer is higher than a concentration of manganese in an inner portion of the coating layer, and a molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in a range from about 100:0 to about 30:70.

2. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the average composition of the complex oxide particle is comprised of a Li (1+w) Co (1−x−y) M1 x M 2y O (2−z) ; and

wherein M1 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), and zirconium (Zr);

M2 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of boron (B), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), tin (Sn), tungsten (W), yttrium (Y), niobium (Nb), calcium (Ca), and strontium (Sr);

values of w, x, y, and z are respectively in the range of −0.10≦w≦0.10, 0.001≦x≦0.10, 0≦y<0.40, and −0.10≦z≦0.20, and

the molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in the range from about 100:0 to about 20:80.

The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the oxide of the coating layer further comprises at least one of additional elements selected from the group consisting of magnesium, aluminum, boron, titanium, vanadium, chromium, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, zirconium, yttrium, niobium, calcium, and strontium, and wherein a molar composition ratio of said additional elements to the at least one of nickel and manganese of the coating layer is about 40 molar % or less.

4. The cathode active material according to claim 1 , wherein the weight amount of the coating layer is from about 0.5 wt % to about 50 wt % of the complex oxide particle.

5. A cathode containing:

a cathode active material comprising:

a complex oxide particle comprising an oxide containing at least lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co); and

a coating layer which is provided on at least part of the complex oxide particle and is made of an oxide containing lithium and at least one of nickel and manganese,

wherein a concentration of manganese in an outer portion of the coating layer is higher than a concentration of manganese in an inner portion of the coating layer, and a molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in a range from about 100:0 to about 30:70.

6. The cathode according to claim 5 , wherein the average composition of the complex oxide particle is comprised of a Li (1+w) Co (1−x−y) M1 x M 2y O (2−z) ; and

wherein M1 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), and zirconium (Zr);

M2 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of boron (B), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), tin (Sn), tungsten (W), yttrium (Y), niobium (Nb), calcium (Ca), and strontium (Sr);

values of w, x, y, and z are respectively in the range of −0.10≦w≦0.10, 0.001≦x≦0.10, 0≦y<0.40, and −0.10≦z≦0.20, and

the molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in the range from about 100:0 to about 20:80.

The cathode according to claim 5 , wherein the oxide of the coating layer further comprises at least one of additional elements selected from the group consisting of magnesium, aluminum, boron, titanium, vanadium, chromium, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, zirconium, yttrium, niobium, calcium, and strontium, and wherein a molar composition ratio of said additional elements to the at least one of nickel and manganese of the coating layer is about 40 molar % or less.

8. The cathode according to claim 5 , wherein the weight amount of the coating layer is from about 0.5 wt % to about 50 wt % of the complex oxide particle.

9. A battery comprising:

a cathode containing a cathode active material comprising:

a complex oxide particle comprising an oxide containing at least lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co); and

a coating layer which is provided on at least part of the complex oxide particle and is made of an oxide containing lithium and at least one of nickel and manganese,

wherein a concentration of manganese in an outer portion of the coating layer is higher than a concentration of manganese in an inner portion of the coating layer, and a molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in a range from about 100:0 to about 30:70.

10. The battery according to claim 9 , wherein the average composition of the complex oxide particle is comprised of a Li (1+w) Co (1−x−y) M1 x M 2y O (2−z) ; and

wherein M1 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), and zirconium (Zr);

M2 represents at least one selected from the group consisting of boron (B), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), tin (Sn), tungsten (W), yttrium (Y), niobium (Nb), calcium (Ca), and strontium (Sr);

values of w, x, y, and z are respectively in the range of −0.10≦w≦0.10, 0.001≦x≦0.10, 0≦y<0.40, and −0.10≦z≦0.20, and

the molar composition ratio between nickel and manganese in the coating layer is in the range from about 100:0 to about 20:80.

The battery according to claim 9 , wherein the oxide of the coating layer further comprises at least one of additional elements selected from the group consisting of magnesium, aluminum, boron, titanium, vanadium, chromium, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, zirconium, yttrium, niobium, calcium, and strontium, and wherein a molar composition ratio of said additional elements to the at least one of nickel and manganese of the coating layer is about 40 molar % or less.

12. The battery according to claim 9 , wherein the weight amount of the coating layer is from about 0.5 wt % to about 50 wt % of the complex oxide particle.
