Abstract

A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network including estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway, determining a demand rate of an IP gateway, allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the demand rate, traffic priority, or traffic weighting, allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when excess bandwidth is available, scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on traffic priority, service plan of a VSAT, or physical layer properties of the VSAT, performing priority queue servicing of traffic at a gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, two or more modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue.

Claims (87)

1. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT), and physical layer properties of the VSAT; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein estimating the bandwidth capacity is based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the demand rate of the IP gateway is based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway includes calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway includes calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway further includes managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

6. A system for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

an IP gateway; and

a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface,

wherein the gateway estimates a bandwidth capacity of the gateway, the IP gateway determines a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of the IP gateway, the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting, the IP gateway schedules traffic based on the traffic priority, a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) service plan, physical layer properties of the VSAT, and the gateway performs priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein the gateway estimates the bandwidth capacity based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the IP gateway determines the demand rate based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway by calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein IP gateway schedules traffic by calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the IP gateway schedules traffic by managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

11. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a terminal, and physical layer properties of the terminal; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein estimating the bandwidth capacity is based on a distribution of traffic for terminals, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

12. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT), and physical layer properties of the VSAT; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway includes calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein estimating the bandwidth capacity is based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein determining the demand rate of the IP gateway is based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway includes calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway further includes managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

17. A system for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

an IP gateway; and

a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface,

wherein the gateway estimates a bandwidth capacity of the gateway, the IP gateway determines a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of the IP gateway, the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting, the IP gateway schedules traffic based on the traffic priority, a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) service plan, physical layer properties of the VSAT, and the gateway performs priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway by calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the gateway estimates the bandwidth capacity based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the IP gateway determines the demand rate based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein IP gateway schedules traffic by calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the IP gateway schedules traffic by managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

22. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a terminal, and physical layer properties of the terminal; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway includes calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

23. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT), and physical layer properties of the VSAT; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway includes calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein estimating the bandwidth capacity is based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

25. The method of claim 23 , wherein determining the demand rate of the IP gateway is based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

26. The method of claim 23 , wherein allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway includes calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

27. The method of claim 23 , wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway further includes managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

28. A system for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

an IP gateway; and

a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface,

wherein the gateway estimates a bandwidth capacity of the gateway, the IP gateway determines a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of the IP gateway, the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting, the IP gateway schedules traffic based on the traffic priority, a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) service plan, physical layer properties of the VSAT, and the gateway performs priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein IP gateway schedules traffic by calculating a sorting ratio for VSATs based on the service plans of the respective VSATs and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the VSATs based on the calculated sorting ratio.

29. The system of claim 28 , wherein the gateway estimates the bandwidth capacity based on a distribution of traffic for VSATs, the distribution of traffic including traffic of a plurality of different modulation and coding schemes.

30. The system of claim 28 , wherein the IP gateway determines the demand rate based on a demand rate for background traffic, a demand rate for interactive traffic, and a demand rate for streaming traffic.

31. The system of claim 28 , wherein the gateway allocates bandwidth to the IP gateway by calculating a packet delay, calculating an overall rate allocation, and calculating a rate allocation for each of a plurality of IP gateways which are communicating with the gateway.

32. The system of claim 28 , wherein the IP gateway schedules traffic by managing throughput limitations according to a token bucket scheme.

33. A method for traffic management and resource allocation on a shared access network comprising:

estimating a bandwidth capacity of a gateway configured to communicate over an air interface;

determining a demand rate, a traffic priority, and traffic weighting of an IP gateway, wherein the gateway passes traffic between the IP gateway and air interface, such that the gateway and the IP gateway are both on the same side of the air interface;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway based on the estimated bandwidth capacity and at least one of the demand rate, the traffic priority, and the traffic weighting;

allocating bandwidth to the IP gateway in advance of demand when, based on the estimated bandwidth capacity, excess bandwidth is available;

scheduling traffic at the IP gateway based on at least one of the traffic priority, a service plan of a terminal, and physical layer properties of the terminal; and

performing priority queue servicing of traffic at the gateway using a real time traffic priority queue, a non-real time traffic priority queue, at least two modulation and coding queue groups, and a code block queue,

wherein scheduling traffic at the IP gateway includes calculating a sorting ratio for terminals based on the service plans of the respective terminals and a base plan, and assigning bandwidth to the terminals based on the calculated sorting ratio.
