Abstract

A sensor system and method for estimating a hitch angle of a trailer attached to a vehicle includes a primary sensor and a secondary sensor. The primary sensor has a camera that monitors a target on the trailer to determine a measured hitch angle. The secondary sensor monitors the trailer to determine an indicator of the hitch angle. The sensor system also includes a controller to steer the vehicle to attain a selected hitch angle when the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator of the hitch angle.

Claims (34)

1 . A sensor system for estimating a hitch angle of a trailer attached to a vehicle, comprising:

a primary sensor having a camera monitoring a target on the trailer to determine a measured hitch angle;

a secondary sensor monitoring the trailer to determine an indicator of the hitch angle; and

a controller steering the vehicle to attain a selected hitch angle if the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator.

2 . The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the indicator defines a tolerance range of acceptable hitch angles, and wherein the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator when the measured hitch angle is within the tolerance range.

3 . The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the secondary sensor includes a pair of energy transducers coupled with the vehicle on opposing sides of a hitch connection between the vehicle and the trailer for determining the indicator.

4 . The sensor system of claim 3 , wherein a difference in return signals from the pair of energy transducers is used to determine the indicator.

5 . The sensor system of claim 3 , wherein the pair of energy transducers includes onboard ultrasonic sensors that monitor the trailer to determine the indicator, and wherein the indicator includes a second measured hitch angle that defines a tolerance range of acceptable hitch angles.

6 . The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the secondary sensor includes at least one energy transducer coupled with the vehicle that senses when the trailer reaches a critical angle.

7 . The sensor system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a steering input apparatus for a user to select the selected hitch angle desired between the vehicle and the trailer, wherein the controller operates the vehicle in reverse based on the selected hitch angle.

8 . The sensor system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a steering assist system on the vehicle that receives a steering instruction from the controller for controlling steerable wheels of the vehicle to position the vehicle and the trailer at the selected hitch angle.

9 . The sensor system of claim 8 , wherein the controller determines the steering instruction as a function of kinematic information of the vehicle and the trailer, the selected hitch angle, and the measured hitch angle.

10 . A sensor system for monitoring a trailer attached to a vehicle, comprising:

a primary sensor on the vehicle measuring a first hitch angle between the vehicle and the trailer;

a secondary sensor on the vehicle measuring a second hitch angle between the vehicle and the trailer; and

a controller operating the vehicle in reverse based on the first hitch angle being within a tolerance range defined by the second hitch angle.

11 . The sensor system of claim 10 , wherein the primary sensor includes a video imaging camera on the vehicle that monitors a target on the trailer to determine the first hitch angle.

12 . The sensor system of claim 11 , wherein the secondary sensor includes a pair of onboard ultrasonic sensors on opposing sides of the vehicle for monitoring the trailer, and wherein a difference in return from the pair of onboard ultrasonic sensors is used to determine the second hitch angle.

13 . The sensor system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a steering input apparatus for a user to select a desired hitch angle between the vehicle and the trailer, wherein the controller operates the vehicle in reverse based on the desired hitch angle.

14 . The sensor system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a steering assist system on the vehicle that receives a steering instruction from the controller for controlling steerable wheels of the vehicle to position the vehicle and the trailer at the desired hitch angle.

15 . The sensor system of claim 14 , wherein the controller determines the steering instruction as a function of kinematic information of the vehicle and the trailer, the desired hitch angle, and the first hitch angle.

16 . A method for estimating a hitch angle of a trailer attached to a vehicle, comprising:

monitoring a target on the trailer with a primary sensor on the vehicle to determine a measured hitch angle;

monitoring the trailer with a secondary sensor on the vehicle to determine an indicator of the hitch angle; and

operating the vehicle in reverse with a controller to steer the vehicle to a desired hitch angle when the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the indicator defines a tolerance range of acceptable hitch angles, and wherein the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator when the measured hitch angle is within the tolerance range.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the measured hitch angle includes an average measurement over an interval of time, and wherein the measured hitch angle correlates with the indicator when the average measurement is within the tolerance range.

19 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

selecting the desired hitch angle between the vehicle and the trailer by rotating a steering input apparatus, wherein the controller determines a steering instruction for the vehicle based on dimensions of the vehicle and the trailer, the desired hitch angle, and the measured hitch angle.

20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the secondary sensor includes a pair of energy transducers on opposing sides of a hitch connection between the vehicle and the trailer, and wherein a difference in return signals from the pair of energy transducers is used to determine the indicator.
