Abstract

A system may provide for retrieving data within a selected region of a map is provided. The system may include mobile devices configured to display a map and to receive a user selection of a region of the map. An application server may receive data from the mobile device, representing the user selected region of the map and a search criterion. A database may be in operative communication with the application server and executes a query using the data representing the selected region of the map and the search criterion and to return data results corresponding to a plurality of locations within the selected region and related to the search criterion. The mobile device may further be configured to display the data results corresponding to the plurality of locations on the selected region of the map and the displayed data results are automatically updated when the user moves the selected region of the map.

Claims (45)

1. A system for retrieving data within a selected region of a map, comprising:

a mobile device configured to display a region of a map and a mini-map component within the displayed region,

wherein in response to a user selection of a second region of the mini-map the mobile device updates the displayed region of the map to display an updated region of the map corresponding to the selected second region of the mini-map;

an application server configured to receive data from the mobile device representing the updated region of the map and a search criterion;

a database in operative communication with the application server configured to execute a query using the data representing the updated region of the map and the search criterion and to return data results corresponding to a plurality of locations within the updated region and related to the search criterion;

wherein the mobile device is further configured to display the data results corresponding to the plurality of locations on the updated region of the map,

further wherein the displayed data results are automatically updated when the user selects the second region of the mini-map.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the displayed region of the map is displayed in accordance with a first scale, and further wherein the updated region of the map updates proportionally to a change in the first scale of the displayed region of the map.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first scale of the displayed region of map is updated when the user selects the second region of the mini-map.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display of the mobile device comprises a touch screen of the mobile device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the updated of the map further updates in response to a user input on a screen of the mobile device that changes the displayed region of the map.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the application server is further configured to receive a user selection of a category from the mobile device.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the displayed data results comprise a subset of the returned data results that are associated with user selected category.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the wherein the application server is further configured to receive a second user selection of a category from the mobile device, and the database is further configured to automatically update the returned data results to include data results associated with the second user selected category.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wherein the application server is further configured to receive a search query term from the mobile device, and the database is further configured to automatically update the returned data results to include data results associated with the search query term.

10. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a programmed processor for retrieving data within a user selected region of a map, the storage medium comprising instructions operative for:

receiving, by the processor, a first request for data corresponding to a user selected region of a map and a search criterion;

identifying, by the processor, data results corresponding to a plurality of business locations within the user selected region of the map and corresponding to the search criterion;

displaying the data results on a map of a mobile device;

displaying a mini-map with the map of the mobile device;

automatically updating, by the processor, the user selected region of the map in response to a user selection of a mini-map region on the mini-map,

wherein the updated user selected region of the map corresponds to the user selected mini-map region; and

automatically updating, by the processor, the data results displayed on the map of the mobile device when the user selected region of the map changes.

11. The storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the map of the mobile device is displayed in accordance with a first scale and the user selected region of the map updates proportionally to a change in the first scale of the map.

12. The storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the first scale of the map changes in response to a user input on the screen of the mobile device.

13. The storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising instructions operative for:

automatically updating the displayed data results when the user selected region of the map is resized.

14. The storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising instructions operative for:

receiving a user search query from the mobile device; and

automatically updating the displayed results to include data results associated with the user search query.

15. The storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the receiving a user search query comprises receiving a user selection of a business name or category of business.

16. A computer-implemented method using a processor for retrieving data specific to a user selected region of a map, comprising:

receiving a user selection of a geographic region of a map displayed on a mobile device and a search criterion;

determining data results representing a plurality of business locations within the geographic region of the map that correspond to the search criterion;

displaying the data results on the map displayed on the mobile device;

displaying a mini-map with the map displayed on the mobile device;

receiving a user selection of a mini-map region of the mini-map;

automatically updating the map displayed on the mobile device to display a region corresponding to the selected mini-map region in response to the user selection; and

automatically refreshing the displayed data results when the user changes the selected geographic region of the map.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , wherein the map displayed on the mobile device is displayed in accordance with a first scale, and further wherein the selected geographic region updates proportionally to a change in the first scale of the map.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , wherein the first scale of the displayed map is updated when the user resizes the selected geographic region of the map.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , further comprising:

receiving a user search query from the mobile device; and

automatically refreshing the displayed results to include data results associated with the user search query.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 19 , wherein the receiving a user search query comprises receiving a user selection of a business name or category of business.
