Abstract

A system may be operable to circulate a working fluid between first and second heat exchangers. The system may include a suction line, a low-side compressor, a high-side compressor and a discharge line. The low-side and high-side compressors may both be in fluid communication with the suction and discharge lines.

Claims (26)

1. A system operable to circulate fluid between first and second heat exchangers and including a suction line, a low-side compressor, a high-side compressor and a discharge line, said low-side and high-side compressors both being in fluid communication with said suction and discharge lines, wherein said high-side compressor includes a first shell assembly having first and second inlets, said first inlet receiving fluid from said low-side compressor at a first pressure, said second inlet receiving fluid discharged from said low-side compressor at a second pressure that is higher than said first pressure,

wherein said high-side compressor includes a first compression mechanism, said first shell assembly defining a first discharge-pressure chamber, said first compression mechanism is disposed within said first discharge-pressure chamber, and wherein said low-side compressor includes a second shell assembly and a second compression mechanism, said second shell assembly defining a suction-pressure chamber and a second discharge-pressure chamber, said second compression mechanism is disposed within said suction-pressure chamber,

wherein said second shell assembly includes a third inlet, a discharge-fluid outlet and a suction-fluid outlet, wherein said third inlet and said suction-fluid outlet are in fluid communication with said suction-pressure chamber, and wherein said discharge-fluid outlet is in fluid communication with said second discharge-pressure chamber.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said first compression mechanism defining at least one compression pocket that receives fluid from said first inlet and is fluidly isolated from fluid received by said high-side compressor from said second inlet.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said second shell assembly is disposed between said suction line and said first inlet, such that fluid passes through said suction-pressure chamber defined by said shell after exiting said suction line and before entering said high-side compressor.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an oil conduit fluidly connecting oil sumps of said low-side and high-side compressors.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said first inlet receives fluid from said low-side compressor before flowing through either of said first and second heat exchangers.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said low-side compressor includes a motor disposed within said suction-pressure chamber and drivingly engaged with said second compression mechanism.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein said high-side compressor includes another motor disposed within said first discharge-pressure chamber and drivingly engaged with said first compression mechanism.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said second shell assembly includes a fourth inlet in fluid communication with said suction-pressure chamber.

9. A system operable to circulate fluid between first and second heat exchangers and including a suction line, a low-side compressor, a high-side compressor and a discharge line, said low-side and high-side compressors both being in fluid communication with said suction and discharge lines, wherein said high-side compressor includes a first shell assembly having first and second inlets, said first inlet receiving fluid from said low-side compressor at a first pressure, said second inlet receiving fluid discharged from said low-side compressor at a second pressure that is higher than said first pressure,

wherein said first inlet receives fluid from said low-side compressor before flowing through either of said first and second heat exchangers.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein said high-side compressor includes a compression mechanism defining at least one compression pocket that receives fluid from said first inlet and is fluidly isolated from fluid received by said high-side compressor from said second inlet.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein a shell of said low-side compressor is disposed between said suction line and said first inlet, such that fluid passes through a suction chamber defined by said shell after exiting said suction line and before entering said high-side compressor.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising an oil conduit fluidly connecting oil sumps of said low-side and high-side compressors.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein said low-side compressor includes a second shell assembly and a motor disposed within a suction-pressure chamber defined by said second shell assembly.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein said high-side compressor includes another motor disposed within a discharge-pressure chamber defined by said first shell assembly.

15. A system operable to circulate fluid between first and second heat exchangers and including a suction line, a low-side compressor, a high-side compressor and a discharge line, said low-side and high-side compressors both being in fluid communication with said suction and discharge lines, wherein said high-side compressor includes a first shell assembly having first and second inlets, said first inlet receiving fluid from said low-side compressor at a first pressure, said second inlet receiving fluid discharged from said low-side compressor at a second pressure that is higher than said first pressure,

said high-side compressor including a first compression mechanism, said first shell assembly defining a first discharge-pressure chamber, said first compression mechanism is disposed within said first discharge-pressure chamber,

said low-side compressor including a second shell assembly and a second compression mechanism, said second shell assembly defining a suction-pressure chamber and a second discharge-pressure chamber, said second compression mechanism is disposed within said suction-pressure chamber,

wherein said first heat exchanger receives working fluid from said high-side compressor, and said second heat exchanger receives working fluid from said first heat exchanger, wherein said first inlet receives fluid from said low-side compressor before flowing through either of said first and second heat exchangers.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein said first compression mechanism defines at least one compression pocket that receives fluid from said first inlet and is fluidly isolated from fluid received by said high-side compressor from said second inlet.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein a shell of said low-side compressor is disposed between said suction line and said first inlet, such that fluid passes through a suction chamber defined by said shell after exiting said suction line and before entering said high-side compressor.

18. The system of claim 15 , further comprising an oil conduit fluidly connecting oil sumps of said low-side and high-side compressors.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein said low-side compressor includes a motor disposed within said suction-pressure chamber and drivingly engaged with said second compression mechanism.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein said high-side compressor includes another motor disposed within said first discharge-pressure chamber and drivingly engaged with said first compression mechanism.
