Abstract

Unattended secure device authorization techniques are provided. An operating system (OS) module, which is responsible for device validation when that device is interfaced to a host device, is enhanced. The enhanced OS module silently checks the peripheral device's identifier against a white list and if a match occurs, the enhanced OS module grants permission to the host device applications; if no match occurs, the enhanced OS module silently rejects application access to the device. In an embodiment, the enhanced OS module interacts with the device to determine whether the device is to be authorized or rejected.

Claims (12)

1. A method, comprising:

identifying, by an authenticator executing on a host, a device interfaced to the host;

checking, by the authenticator, a device identifier obtained from the device against authorized device identifiers;

automatically granting, by the authenticator, an application access to the device when the device identifier is one of the authorized device identifiers, including interacting, by the authenticator, with a device interface of the device to authenticate the device for application access, wherein interacting includes encrypting, by the authenticator, a message with a key that is sent to the device interface and receiving, by the authenticator, a decrypted version back from the device interface indicating access is to be granted and authentication passed for the application to access the device; and

automatically denying, by the authenticator, the application access to the device when the device identifier is unmatched in the authorized device identifiers.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying further includes obtaining, by the authenticator, an event from an operating system (OS) of the host, wherein the event is associated with the device being newly interfaced to the host.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising, acting, by the authenticator, as a proxy interface for an OS application that typically handles the event for the OS of the host.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising, replacing, by the authenticator a reference to an OS application that typically handles the event for the OS of the host with a reference to the authenticator.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically granting further includes performing, by the authenticator, the access without any action being required from the application and without any awareness by the application.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically denying further includes logging, by the authenticator, to a log file on the host one or more of: a host identifier for the host, the device identifier, a calendar date for the denial, a time of day for the denial, and a processing state of the application.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically denying further includes automatically sending, by the authenticator, a notification to a predefined resource using a predefined communication channel based on the denial.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically denying further includes performing, by the authenticator, the denial of access without any action being required from the application and without any awareness by the application.
