Abstract

A method for drilling a wellbore includes drilling the wellbore by injecting drilling fluid into a top of a tubular string disposed in the wellbore at a first flow rate and rotating a drill bit. The tubular string includes: the drill bit disposed on a bottom thereof, tubular joints connected together, a longitudinal bore therethrough, a port through a wall thereof, and a sleeve operable between an open position where the port is exposed to the bore and a closed position where a wall of the sleeve is disposed between the port and the bore. The method further includes moving the sleeve to the open position; and injecting drilling fluid into the port at a second flow rate while adding a tubular joint(s) to the tubular string. The injection of drilling fluid into the tubular string is continuously maintained between drilling and adding the joint(s).

Claims (30)

1. A continuous flow sub for use with a drill string, comprising:

a tubular housing having a longitudinal bore therethrough and a port formed through a wall thereof;

a ball valve disposed in the bore; and

a check valve disposed in the port and comprising:

a body having an outer wall coupled to a portion of the housing wall adjacent to the port and an inner wall connected to the outer wall by a web;

a poppet disposed through a bore of the inner wall and movable relative to the body between an open position and a closed position; and

a spring biasing the poppet toward the closed position.

2. The continuous flow sub of claim 1 , wherein:

the poppet engages a seat formed in an end of the body in the closed position,

the poppet extends into the housing bore in the open position, thereby allowing fluid flow through the port and into the bore, and

the poppet moves between the positions in response to differentials between a pressure of the housing bore and an external pressure.

3. The continuous flow sub of claim 1 , further comprising a cap fastened to the body and isolating the poppet from an external pressure.

4. The continuous flow sub of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid coupling connectable to the body using a breech plug locking system.

5. The continuous flow sub of claim 1 , wherein the tubular string further comprises a first centralizer or stabilizer located proximate to the port.

6. The continuous flow sub of claim 5 , wherein:

the first centralizer or stabilizer is located proximately above the port; and

the tubular string further comprises a second centralizer or stabilizer located proximately below the port.

7. The continuous flow sub of claim 5 , wherein at least a portion of the first centralizer or stabilizer is capable of rotating independently of the tubular joints.

8. A method for drilling a wellbore, comprising:

drilling the wellbore by injecting drilling fluid into a top of a tubular string disposed in the wellbore at a first flow rate and rotating a drill bit, wherein:

the tubular string comprises:

the drill bit disposed on a bottom thereof,

tubular joints connected together, and

the continuous flow sub of claim 1 , wherein the ball valve is open and the poppet is in the closed position;

the drilling fluid exits the drill bit and carries cuttings from the drill bit, and

the cuttings and drilling fluid (returns) flow to surface via an annulus defined between the tubular string and the wellbore; and

injecting drilling fluid into the port at a second flow rate while adding a tubular joint or stand of joints to the tubular string, thereby opening the poppet, wherein injection of drilling fluid into the tubular string is continuously maintained between drilling and adding the joint or stand to the tubular string.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

engaging the tubular string with a rotating control device (RCD), wherein a variable choke valve is disposed in an outlet line in fluid communication with the RCD; and

controlling pressure of the returns using the variable choke valve.
