Abstract

A measurement system for measuring a parameter of the muscular-skeletal system is disclosed. The measurement system comprises a capacitor, a signal generator, a digital counter, counter register, a digital clock, a digital timer, and a data register. The sensor of the measurement system is the capacitor. The measurement system generates a repeating signal having a measurement cycle that corresponds to the capacitance of the capacitor. The capacitor comprises more than one capacitor mechanically in series. Electrically, the capacitor comprises more than one capacitor in parallel. In one embodiment, the capacitor includes a dielectric layer comprising polyimide. A force, pressure, or load is applied to the capacitor that elastically compresses the device.

Claims (35)

1. An orthopedic measurement system configured to measure a parameter comprising:

a sensor coupled to the muscular-skeletal system configured to measure the parameter;

electronic circuitry coupled to the sensor where the electronic circuitry includes a transmitter to transmit measurement data;

a shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the sensor; and

a remote system configured to receive the measurement data.

2. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the shield is coupled to ground.

3. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the shield is integrated in the sensor.

4. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the shield is between the sensor and an external environment.

5. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the sensor is in a housing and a portion of the housing is the shield.

6. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the shield is between the sensor and the electronic circuitry.

7. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 where the shield is configured to shield the sensor and the electronic circuitry.

8. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 1 further including interconnect coupling the sensor to the electronic circuitry and where the sensor is formed in the interconnect.

9. An orthopedic measurement system configured to measure a parameter comprising:

a sensor coupled to the muscular-skeletal system configured to measure the parameter;

interconnect;

electronic circuitry where the electronic circuitry includes a transmitter to transmit measurement data and where the interconnect couples the sensor to the electronic circuitry;

a first shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the interconnect; and

a remote system configured to receive the measurement data.

10. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 9 further including a second shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the sensor.

11. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 10 where the sensor is integrated in the interconnect and where the first and second shield is integrated in the interconnect.

12. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 10 further including a third shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the electronic circuitry.

13. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 9 further including a second shield between the sensor and the electronic circuitry.

14. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 9 further including a second shield between the sensor and an external environment.

15. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 9 where the electronic circuitry is in a housing and a portion of the housing is the shield.

16. An orthopedic measurement system configured to measure a parameter comprising:

a sensor coupled to the muscular-skeletal system configured to measure the parameter;

electronic circuitry coupled to the sensor where the electronic circuitry includes a transmitter to transmit measurement data;

a first shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the electronic circuitry; and

a remote system configured to receive the measurement data.

17. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 16 further including a second shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the sensor.

18. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 17 further including:

interconnect coupling the sensor to the electronic circuitry; and

a third shield configured to reduce parasitic coupling to the interconnect.

19. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 16 where the first shield is between the electronic circuitry and the external environment.

20. The orthopedic measurement system of claim 16 where the first shield is between the sensor and the electronic circuitry.
