Abstract

The invention provides for modified proppants, comprising a proppant particle and a hydrogel coating, wherein the hydrogel coating localizes on the surface of the proppant particle to produce the modified proppant, methods of manufacturing such proppants and methods of use.

Claims (36)

1. A modified proppant comprising a proppant particle substrate and a coating of a hydrogel-forming polymer, wherein the coating localizes on the surfaces of the proppant particle substrate to produce the modified proppant,

wherein the coating comprises a hydrogel-forming polymer having a weight average molecular weight of≧about 1 million g/mol,

wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer forms a substantially continuous film on the surface of the proppant particle which is crosslinked,

wherein swelling of the hydrogel-forming polymer to increase the buoyancy of the modified proppant is essentially complete within 10 minutes of being combined with an aqueous fracturing fluid,

wherein 1 gram of the modified proppant when mixed with water in a 20 ml glass vial for about 1 minute and then allowed to sit undisturbed until the hydrogel-polymer has been hydrated exhibits an expanded settled bed height which is about 1.5 to about 28 times greater than the settled bed height of an otherwise identical proppant not modified with a hydrogel coating, and

wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.2 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

2. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein after having been subjected to shear at a shear rate of about 550 s −1 for 10 minutes the expanded settled bed height of the modified proppant is at least about 75% of the settled bed height of the proppant before shearing begins.

3. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.4 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

4. The modified proppant of claim 3 , wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.6 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

5. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein a supernatant liquid obtained by:

(a) subjecting the modified proppant to shear according to the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification followed by

(b) mixing a 100 gram sample of the modified proppant so obtained with 1 liter of water for about 1 minute to produce the supernatant liquid;

is characterized by a viscosity less than 20 cps.

6. The modified proppant of claim 5 , wherein the viscosity of the supernatant liquid is 10 cps or less.

7. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein swelling of the hydrogel-forming polymer is essentially complete within 5 minutes of being combined with the aqueous fracturing fluid.

8. The modified proppant of claim 7 , wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.6 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

9. The modified proppant of claim 7 , wherein a supernatant liquid obtained by:

(a) subjecting the modified proppant to shear according to the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification followed by

(b) mixing a 100 gram sample of the modified proppant so obtained with 1 liter of water for about 1 minute to produce the supernatant liquid;

is characterized by a viscosity less than 20 cps.

10. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer has been crosslinked by an amount sufficient to prevent premature hydration due to humidity.

11. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the proppant is free-flowing before being combined with an aqueous fracturing fluid.

12. The modified proppant of claim 11 , wherein the proppant is free-flowing after being subjected to a relative humidity of between about 80%-90% for one hour at 25-35° C.

13. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the modified proppant comprises a cationic/anionic polymer pair.

14. The modified proppant of claim 13 , wherein the cationic/anionic polymer pair comprises a cationic polyacrylamide and an anionic polymer.

15. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel coating on the proppant particle substrate includes an alcohol.

16. The modified proppant of claim 15 , wherein the alcohol is at least one of ethanol, propanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerol.

17. The modified proppant of claim 16 , wherein the alcohol is at least one of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerol.

18. The modified proppant of claim 17 , wherein the alcohol is glycerol.

The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyacrylamide, copolymers of acrylamide with anionic and cationic comonomers, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, copolymers of acrylamide with hydrophobic comonomers, poly(acrylic acid), poly(acrylic acid) salts, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, guar gum, alginate, carrageenan, locust bean gum, carboxymethyl guar, carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar gum, hydrophobically associating swellable emulsion (HASE) polymers, latex polymers and starches.

20. The modified proppant of claim 19 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyacrylamide, copolymers of acrylamide, poly(acrylic acid), poly(acrylic acid) salts and starches.

21. The modified proppant of claim 19 , wherein the cross-linking agent is covalent and selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, an anhydride, an aldehyde, a diisocyanate and a carbodiamide.

22. The modified proppant of claim 21 , wherein the cross-linking agent is a diisocyanate.

A modified proppant for combining with an aqueous fracturing fluid, the modified proppant comprising a proppant particle substrate and a coating of a hydrogel-forming polymer, wherein the coating localizes on the surfaces of the proppant particle substrate to produce the modified proppant, wherein the coating comprises a hydrogel-forming polymer having a weight average molecular weight of≧about 1 million g/mol, wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer forms a substantially continuous film on the surface of the proppant particle which is crosslinked, wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer is selected so that when 1 to 3 grams of the dried modified proppant is added to 100 ml of tap water in a 100 ml graduated cylinder and then inverted 8 times, the modified proppant exhibits a settling time which is about 2 (22/10) to 7 (71/10) times the settling time of the proppant substrate particle, and wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.2 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

24. The modified proppant of claim 23 , wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.4 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.

25. The modified proppant of claim 24 , wherein the modified proppant exhibits a shearing ratio of≧0.6 when measured by the Shear Analytical Test described in the specification.
