Sprayable Hemostat Using Soluble Oxidized Cellulose With Miniaturized Electrospray System And Method
An applicator for forming a film is disclosed. The applicator includes: a first extension tube coupled to a source of a modified cellulose solution; a shaft coupled to the first extension tube at a proximal end thereof, the shaft defining a first lumen in fluid communication with the first extension tube for transmission of the modified cellulose solution through the shaft; and an atomizer disposed at a distal end of the and configured to atomize the modified cellulose solution into a plurality of particles.
1 . An applicator for forming a film comprising:
a first extension tube coupled to a source of a modified cellulose solution;
a shaft coupled to the first extension tube at a proximal end thereof, the shaft defining a first lumen in fluid communication with the first extension tube for transmission of the modified cellulose solution through the shaft; and
an atomizer disposed at a distal end of the and configured to atomize the modified cellulose solution into a plurality of particles.
2 . The applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the atomizer is an electrospray assembly comprising a plurality of electrodes coupled to a power source.
3 . The applicator according to claim 1 , further comprising:
a second extension tube coupled to a source of a cross-linking agent, wherein the second extension tube is coupled to the shaft, the shaft defining a second lumen in fluid communication with the second extension tube for transmission of the cross-linking agent through the shaft.
4 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the atomizer is configured to atomize the cross-linking agent into an aerosol plume of a plurality of particles of the cross-linking agent.
5 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent is an aqueous solution of chitosan having a pH from about 2.0 to about 6.0.
6 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent is an aqueous solution of at least one multivalent cation selected from the group consisting of calcium, barium, zinc, magnesium, chromium, platinum, and iron.
7 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent is selected from the group consisting of water, saline, phosphate buffered saline, and combinations thereof.
8 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent is carboxymethylcellulose in an aqueous solution at a concentration from about 0.5% by weight of the solution to about 5% by weight of the solution.

The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent is a solution of an acrylic polymer based on at least one of methyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, glyceryl acrylate, glyceryl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, or methacrylamide, and combinations thereof and a solvent selected from the group consisting of acetone, ethyl acetate, dimethyl ether, and combinations thereof.
10 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent comprises a Schiff-base compound selected from the group consisting of amoxicillin, cephalexin, and combinations thereof.
11 . The applicator according to claim 3 , wherein the cross-linking agent comprises trilysine, albumin, polyethylene glycol amine, and combinations thereof.
12 . An applicator for forming a film comprising:
a first extension tube coupled to a source of a modified cellulose solution;
a second extension tube coupled to a source of a cross-linking agent;
a shaft coupled to the first and second extension tubes at a proximal end thereof, the shaft defining a first lumen in fluid communication with the first extension tube for transmission of the modified cellulose solution through the shaft and a second lumen in fluid communication with the second extension tube for transmission of the cross-linking agent through the shaft; and
a tip member disposed at a distal end of the shaft, the tip member comprising an atomizer configured to atomize the modified cellulose solution and the cross-linking agent into a plurality of particles.
13 . The applicator according to claim 12 , wherein the tip member is deflectable with respect to a longitudinal axis defined by the shaft.
14 . The applicator according to claim 13 , wherein the modified cellulose solution and the cross-linking agent are supplied to the shaft simultaneously.
15 . The applicator according to claim 13 , wherein the modified cellulose solution and the cross-linking agent are supplied to the shaft sequentially.
16 . A process for forming a film at a treatment site comprising:
supplying a modified cellulose solution to a first lumen defined by a shaft;
supplying a cross-linking agent to a second lumen defined by the shaft; and
atomizing the modified cellulose solution and the cross-linking agent at a tip member coupled to the shaft to form a plurality of particles that are deposited onto the treatment site to form the film thereon.
17 . The process according to claim 16 , wherein the modified cellulose solution is supplied to the shaft and is atomized prior to cross-linking agent.
18 . The process according to claim 16 , wherein the modified cellulose solution and the cross-linking agent are supplied to the shaft and are atomized simultaneously.
