Abstract

Embodiments of this invention generally relate to systems and methods for eye imaging, and more particularly to measuring the size and position of the lens capsule and of the implanted intraocular lens. In one embodiment, a method for measuring the size and position of the lens capsule and of the implanted intraocular lens comprises generating and emitting one or more light beams at an angle adjacent to the eye, generating one or more eye images, and detecting the position and/or boundary of a lens capsule from its shadow casted by reflected light on the iris.

Claims (38)

1. An eye imaging assembly comprising:

an illumination device positioned to illuminate a patient's eye having a lens capsule;

an imaging device positioned to capture an image of the patient's eye;

a processor operatively coupled to the illumination device and the imaging device; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium that stores a computer program that, when executed, causes the processor to perform or enable the following steps:

generate and emit one or more light beams adjacent to the patient's eye into the patient's eye;

generate one or more eye images with the imaging device; and

detect a position or boundary of the lens capsule within the one or more captured eye images.

2. The eye imaging assembly of claim 1 , wherein the illumination device adjusts the one or more light beams until the position or boundary of the lens capsule is detected.

3. The eye imaging assembly of claim 1 , wherein the illumination device illuminates the patient's eye using infrared (IR) laser.

4. The eye imaging assembly of claim 1 , wherein the illumination device includes a slit lamp which generates a shaped beam of light.

5. The eye imaging assembly of claim 4 , wherein at least one infrared (IR) glass filter is further used to filter part of the spectrum of the slit illumination of the slit lamp.

6. The eye imaging assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one infrared (IR) glass filter is mounted in a filter turret of the slit lamp.

7. The eye imaging assembly of claim 1 , wherein the position or boundary of the lens capsule is detected from its shadow casted by reflected light on an iris of the eye.

8. An eye imaging assembly comprising:

an illumination device positioned to illuminate a patient's eye;

an imaging device positioned to capture an image of the patient's eye;

a processor operatively coupled to the illumination device and the imaging device; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium that stores a computer program that, when executed, causes the processor to perform or enable the following steps:

generate and emit one or more light beams adjacent to the patient's eye into the patient's eye;

generate one or more eye images with the imaging device; and

detect a position or boundary of an intraocular lens within the one or more captured eye images.

9. The eye imaging assembly of claim 8 , wherein the illumination device adjusts the one or more light beams until the position or boundary of the intraocular lens is detected.

10. The eye imaging assembly of claim 8 , wherein the illumination device illuminates the patient's eye using infrared (IR) laser.

11. The eye imaging assembly of claim 8 , wherein the illumination device includes a slit lamp which generates a shaped beam of light.

12. The eye imaging assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least one infrared (IR) glass filter is further used to filter part of the spectrum of the slit illumination of the slit lamp.

13. The eye imaging assembly of claim 12 , wherein the at least one infrared (IR) glass filter is mounted in a filter turret of the slit lamp.

14. The eye imaging assembly of claim 8 , wherein the position or boundary of the intraocular lens is detected from its shadow casted by reflected light on an iris of the eye.

15. An eye imaging assembly for detecting a position or boundary of a lens capsule or an intraocular lens of a patient's eye, comprising:

an illumination device for generating and emitting one or more light beams adjacent to the patient's eye into the patient's eye;

an imaging device for generating one or more eye images;

a processor operatively coupled to the illumination device and the imaging device, the processor detecting the position or boundary of the lens capsule or the intraocular lens;

a user interface input device operatively coupled to the processor, wherein the user interface input device includes one or more controls that adjust the one or more light beams until the position or boundary of the lens capsule or the intraocular lens is detected.

16. The eye imaging assembly of claim 15 , wherein the processor measures the one or more light beams.

17. The eye imaging assembly of claim 15 , wherein the illumination device generates one or more light beams using laser.

18. The eye imaging assembly of claim 15 , wherein the illumination device generates one or more light beams using infrared laser.

19. The eye imaging assembly of claim 15 , wherein the illumination device includes a slit lamp which generates a shaped beam of light.

20. The eye imaging assembly of claim 19 , wherein at least one infrared (IR) glass filter is further used to filter part of the spectrum of the slit illumination of the slit lamp.
