Abstract

Methods of storage and/or retrieval of items from storage racks using carts include electronically determining a size of an item and determining a storage position in a row for the item based on the determined size. The size can be determined by reading indicia on the item and consulting a database to determine a size of the item based on the read indicia. Other methods include electronically determining a characteristic of an item and determining a load movement limit protocol for the item based on the determined characteristic. The protocol may limit velocity or acceleration of movement of the item.

Claims (28)

1. A method of storing an item in a rack having a plurality of layers, each layer having an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle, the method comprising:

electronically determining a characteristic of an item;

determining a load movement limit protocol for the item based on the determined characteristic of the item, the load movement limit protocol including information as to a maximum horizontal velocity, a maximum vertical velocity, a maximum linear acceleration, and a maximum lateral acceleration for moving the item;

electronically determining a size the item, the determined size including information as to a width of the item in a direction along the row when the item is placed in the storage location;

determining a storage position in the row for the item based on the determined size of the item, the step of determining a storage position including determining a row in which to place the item and a storage location along the row in which to place the item;

moving the item to the storage location on the row in the rack; and

staying within the load movement protocol limit during the above steps.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronically determining a size step includes sensing an actual size of the item using at least one sensor.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining a storage position includes determining a desired density of article storage.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronically determining a characteristic step includes:

reading indicia on the item; and

consulting a database to determine a load movement limit protocol of the item based on the read indicia.

5. The method of claim 1 , further including:

retrieving the item from the storage position using the second cart;

moving the item along the row using the second cart;

moving the item onto the first cart;

moving the item along the aisle to the loading position using the first cart; and

staying within the load movement protocol limit during the above steps.

6. The method of claim 1 , further including:

removing the item from the storage position in the row in the rack; and

staying within the load movement protocol limit during the removing step.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moving the load step includes:

placing the item on a first cart in a loading position;

moving the item along an aisle to the row using the first cart;

removing the item from the first cart using a second cart;

moving the item to the storage position using the second cart; and

placing the item at the storage position using the second cart.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second cart has a raisable top platform, a first motor for moving the second cart along the rows and a second motor for selectively raising the top platform to lift an item.
