Abstract

Selective high-frequency spinal cord modulation for inhibiting pain with reduced side effects and associated systems and methods are disclosed. In particular embodiments, high-frequency modulation in the range of from about 1.5 KHz to about 50 KHz may be applied to the patient's spinal cord region to address low back pain without creating unwanted sensory and/or motor side effects. In other embodiments, modulation in accordance with similar parameters can be applied to other spinal or peripheral locations to address other indications.

Claims (48)

1. A method for configuring a spinal cord stimulation system to deliver a therapy signal to a patient's spinal cord the method comprising:

programming the spinal cord stimulation system to

(1) generate a non-paresthesia-generating therapy signal, wherein at least a portion of the therapy signal has a frequency in a frequency range from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz; and

(2) deliver the therapy signal to the patient's spinal cord via an implantable signal delivery device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising programming the spinal cord stimulation system to deliver the therapy signal to a vertebral level between T9 and T12, inclusively.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising programming the spinal cord stimulation system to deliver the therapy signal to a thoracic vertebral level.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising programming the spinal cord stimulation system to deliver the therapy signal to a vertebral level between C3 and C7, inclusively.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frequency range is between 3 kHz and 20 kHz.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frequency range is between 5 kHz and 15 kHz.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frequency is 10 kHz.

8. A method for configuring a spinal cord stimulation system to deliver a therapy signal to a patient's spinal cord, wherein the spinal cord stimulation system includes a signal generator electrically coupleable to at least one implantable signal delivery device, the method comprising:

programming the signal generator to

(1) generate a therapy signal having a frequency of 10 kHz and a current amplitude in an amplitude range from 0.5 mA to 6 mA; and

(2) deliver the therapy signal to the patient's spinal cord, via at least one implantable signal delivery device, wherein the therapy signal provides therapeutic relief without inducing paresthesia in the patient.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the therapy signal at least partially reduces a patient's sensation of pain without affecting neural transmissions of touch or heat.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the current amplitude is at a level that triggers an action potential in a target neural population, independent of any intrinsic neural activity at the target neural population.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising programming the signal generator to generate the therapy signal with at least a portion of the therapy signal being a bi-phasic square-wave.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal at a duty cycle.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the therapy signal has a pulse width between 25 microseconds and 166 microseconds, inclusively.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal at a duty cycle.

15. A method for configuring a spinal cord stimulation system to deliver a therapy signal to a patient's spinal cord to at least partially alleviate a patient's sensation of pain without using paresthesia or tingling to mask the patient's sensation of pain, wherein the spinal cord stimulation system includes a signal generator electrically coupleable to at least one implantable signal delivery device, the method comprising:

programming the signal generator to generate and deliver the therapy signal to the patient's spinal cord, via at least one implantable signal delivery device, without the therapy signal generating paresthesia, wherein at least a portion of the therapy signal has

a frequency in a frequency range from 1.5 kHz to 50 kHz,

a current amplitude in an amplitude range from 0.1 mA to about 6 mA, and

a pulse width between 10 microseconds and 333 microseconds.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal to a vertebral level between T9 and T10, inclusively.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal to a thoracic vertebral level.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal to a vertebral level between C3 and C7, inclusively.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal at a duty cycle.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the frequency range is from 3 kHz to 20 kHz and the pulse width is between 25 microseconds and 166 microseconds.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the frequency range is from 5 kHz to 15 kHz.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein programming includes programming the signal generator to generate the therapy signal at a frequency of 10 kHz, with a pulse width between 30 microseconds and 35 microseconds.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal at a duty cycle.

24. A method for configuring a spinal cord stimulation system to deliver a therapy signal to a patient's spinal cord, wherein the spinal cord stimulation system includes a signal generator electrically coupleable to at least one implantable signal delivery device, and wherein the implantable signal delivery device is implantable proximate to a vertebral level between T9 and T12, inclusively, the method comprising:

programming the signal generator to

(a) generate a non-paresthesia-generating therapy signal, wherein at least

a portion of the therapy signal is a bi-phasic square-wave with

a frequency in a frequency range from 3 kHz to 20 kHz,

a current amplitude in an amplitude range from 0.5 mA to 4 mA, and

a pulse width between 25 microseconds and 166 microseconds; and

(b) deliver the therapy signal via the at least one implantable signal delivery device.

25. The method of claim 24 , further comprising programming the signal generator to deliver the therapy signal to a vertebral level between T9 and T10, inclusively.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the frequency is 10 kHz.

27. The method of claim 24 , further comprising:

programming the signal generator to apply the therapy signal at a duty cycle.

28. The method of claim 24 , wherein at least a portion of the therapy signal has a pulse width between 30 microseconds and 35 microseconds.

29. The method of claim 24 , wherein the frequency is between 5 kHz and 15 kHz.

30. The method of claim 24 , wherein the current amplitude is at a level that triggers an action potential in a target neural population, independent of any intrinsic neural activity at the target neural population.
