Abstract

A device for determining an electrical power parameter of an adjacent electrical wire includes a magnetometer, a display, and a processor. The magnetometer is configured to monitor a magnetic field and to provide an output that is indicative of a magnetic field strength. The processor is in communication with the magnetometer and the display, and is configured to: receive the output from the magnetometer; determine an electrical power parameter from the received output; and provide a visual indication of the determined electrical power parameter via the display.

Claims (38)

1. A smart phone-style portable computing device operative to determine an electrical power parameter of an electrical current flowing through an adjacent electrical wire, the portable computing device comprising:

a three-axis magnetometer configured to monitor a magnetic field in at least two perpendicular axes and to provide an output indicative of the monitored magnetic field;

an integral display configured to provide visual information to a user; and

a processor in communication with the magnetometer and the display, the processor configured to:

poll the output from the magnetometer at a rate slower than a Nyquist frequency of the electrical current;

provide an alignment indication via the display based on the polled output from the magnetometer, wherein the alignment indication instructs an alignment of the device relative to the wire until the monitored magnitude of the magnetic is equal in two perpendicular axes;

determine an electrical power parameter from the monitored magnitude of the magnetic field in the at least two perpendicular axes; and

provide a visual indication of the determined electrical power parameter via the display.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless cellular radio configured to facilitate two-way radio communication between the processor and a network.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power parameter includes at least one of a current flow through the electrical wire, a real power flow through the electrical wire, an apparent power flow through the electrical wire, a power factor of a load coupled with the adjacent electrical wire, an electrical harmonic, harmonic distortion, and a phasor relationship.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power parameter includes a first harmonic of current flow and a third harmonic of current flow.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising audio circuitry in communication with the processor; and

wherein the processor is further configured to determine a voltage within the adjacent electrical wire using the audio circuitry; and

wherein the electrical power parameter includes a current flowing through the adjacent electrical wire.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the processor is configured to determine a power factor of a load coupled with the adjacent electrical wire by comparing a phase of the determined voltage with a phase of the determined current.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the magnetometer is further configured to determine an orientation of the device relative to a global magnetic-north.

8. A cellular telephone configured to communicate with a cellular telephone network, the cellular telephone comprising:

a magnetometer configured to monitor a magnitude of a magnetic field in at least two perpendicular axes and to provide an output indicative of the monitored magnitude of the magnetic field, wherein the magnetometer is further capable of determining an orientation of the cellular telephone relative to a global magnetic north;

a wireless radio configured to facilitate two-way radio communication with the cellular telephone network;

an integral display configured to provide visual information to a user; and

a processor in communication with the wireless radio, the magnetometer, and the display, the processor configured to:

poll the output from the magnetometer at a rate slower than a Nyquist frequency of an electrical current flowing through an adjacent electrical wire;

provide an alignment indication via the display based on the received output from the magnetometer, wherein the alignment indication instructs an alignment of the telephone relative to the adjacent electrical wire until the monitored magnitude of the magnetic field is equal in two perpendicular axes;

determine an electrical power parameter of the electrical current from the polled output of from the magnetometer; and

provide a visual indication of the determined electrical power parameter via the display.

9. The cellular telephone of claim 8 , wherein the power parameter is one of a current flow, a real power flow, an apparent power flow, a power factor, an electrical harmonic, harmonic distortion, and a phasor relationship.

10. The cellular telephone of claim 8 , wherein the power parameter includes a first harmonic of current flow and a third harmonic of current flow.

11. The cellular telephone of claim 8 , further comprising audio circuitry in communication with the processor; and

wherein the processor is further configured to determine a voltage of the adjacent electrical power flow using the audio circuitry; and

wherein the electrical power parameter includes a current of the adjacent electrical power flow.

12. A method of monitoring an electrical parameter of an electrical current flowing through a wire using a cellular telephone, the method comprising:

monitoring the magnitude of a magnetic field emanating from the wire at a sampling rate slower than a Nyquist frequency of the electrical current using a magnetometer within the cellular telephone;

instructing a relative alignment of the cellular telephone relative to the wire via a display integrated with the telephone until the magnitude of the monitored magnetic field is equal in two perpendicular axes;

determining an electrical parameter of the electrical current from the monitored magnetic field; and

displaying the determined electrical parameter via the display.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the electrical parameter is an electrical current.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein monitoring a magnetic field of the wire includes sampling the magnetic field across a plurality of cycles of the magnetic field; and

assembling a single-cycle wave from the samples obtained over the plurality of cycles.
