Apparatus and method for securing tissue
An apparatus and method is disclosed for securing tissue to a bone comprising a novel screw anchor for insertion into a bone by a novel rotational driver. The screw anchor and rotation driver enables the screw to be completely embedded into the bone while permitting a suture to be threaded through a transverse aperture in the screw. The rotation driver facilitates insertion and engagement of a capture with one of a series of protuberance formed along a length of a suture. In addition, the method is disclosed of forming the series of protuberance.
1. An improved hand tool for moving a capture along a suture, the capture having a central locking aperture for moving the capture in a first direction over the suture and for resisting moving the capture in a second direction over the suture, the improved hand tool comprising: a driver having a handle supporting a shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end; said shaft being a solid shaft adjacent to said distal end of said shaft; a channel extending from a central orifice defined in said distal end of said solid shaft and extending axially through said solid shaft and communicating with an outer surface of said solid shaft for enabling the suture to extend therethrough and to extend outside and adjacent to said solid shaft; and a bevel defined at said distal end of said shaft configured for centrally positioning said capture when the suture extending through central orifice of said channel and passes through the central locking aperture of the capture for enabling relative movement between said driver and the suture for pushing the capture along said suture at said distal end of said shaft.
2. An improved hand tool as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said distal end; of said shaft is substantially circular.
3. An improved hand tool for moving a capture along a suture having a series of protuberances disposed along the suture, the capture having a central locking aperture for moving over the series of protuberances in a first direction and for resisting moving over the series of protuberances in a second direction, the improved hand tool comprising:
a driver having a handle supporting a shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end;
said shaft being a solid shaft adjacent to said distal end of said shaft;
a socket defined in said distal end of said solid shaft for receiving a bone anchor;
a first and a second slot communicating said socket with an exterior of said driver for treading a suture through the bone anchor;
a channel extending from a central orifice defined in said socket of said distal end of said solid shaft and extending axially through said solid shaft and communicating with an outer surface of said solid shaft for enabling the suture to extend outside and adjacent to said solid shaft; and
said distal end of said shaft configured for centering the capture in alignment with said central orifice of said channel and for enabling relative movement between said driver and the suture for pushing said capture along said suture at said distal end of said shaft when said suture extends through the central locking aperture of the capture.
4. An improved hand tool as set forth in claim 3 , wherein said distal end of said shaft pushes said capture along said suture in the first direction to properly position the capture to resist movement in the second direction.
5. An improved hand tool for moving a capture along a suture having a series of protuberances disposed along the suture, the capture having a central locking aperture for moving over the series of protuberances in a first direction and for resisting moving over the series of protuberances in a second direction, the improved hand tool comprising:
a driver having a handle supporting a shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end;
said shaft being a solid shaft adjacent to said distal end of said shaft;
a socket defined in said distal end of said solid shaft for receiving a bone anchor;
a first and a second slot communicating said socket with an exterior surface of said driver for treading the suture through the bone anchor;
a channel extending from a central orifice defined in said socket of said distal end of said solid shaft and extending axially through said solid shaft and communicating with an outer surface said solid shaft for enabling the suture to extend outside and adjacent to said shaft; and
said distal end of said shaft configured for centrally positioning said capture when the suture extending through central orifice of said channel passes through the capture for enabling relative movement between the suture and said drive for pushing the capture along said suture at said distal end of said shaft.
6. An improved hand tool for moving a capture along a suture, the capture having a central aperture, the improved hand tool comprising:
a driver having a handle supporting a shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end;
said shaft being a solid shaft adjacent to said distal end of said shaft;
a socket defined in said distal end of said solid shaft for receiving a head of a screw;
a first and a second slot communicating said socket with an exterior surface of said driver for treading the suture through the screw;
a first and a second cutting edge defined in said first and second slots for cutting a bone upon rotation of said rotational driver to simultaneously insert the screw and countersink the head of the screw within a bone;
a channel extending from a central orifice defined in said socket of said distal end of said solid shaft and extending axially through said solid shaft and communicating with an outer surface of said solid shaft for enabling the suture to extend outside and adjacent to said shaft; and
said distal end of said shaft configured for centrally positioning said capture when the suture extending through central orifice of said channel passes through the capture for enabling relative movement between said driver and the suture for pushing the capture along said suture at said distal end of said shaft.
