Abstract

Adjustable opening jacks with designs that incorporate a novel locking hinge mechanism and adjustable separation arms to achieve broader scopes of application, bone plate specificity, and variable bone size capability during various osteotomy procedures. The locking hinge mechanism constrains the upper body from moving in either the vertical plane or anterior-posterior (AP) slope trajectory depending on the mode of application. The opening jack has a configuration that allows for a straight and/or sloped opening.

Claims (9)

1. A method of performing open wedge high tibial osteotomy, the method comprising the steps of:

forming an osteotomy cut in tibia; and

opening the bone to form a wedge-like opening by employing an adjustable osteotomy opening jack, comprising a first plate, a second plate, and a hinge lock mechanism that allows the first plate and the second plate of the opening jack to open in at least a first position or in at least a second position which are different from each other in at least two dimensions, the hinge lock mechanism comprising a locking knob, a hinge shaft, a shaft link and an angle hinge shaft, wherein the hinge shaft is attached to the locking knob at one end and to the shaft link at the other end.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of actuating the hinge lock mechanism to separate the first plate from the second plate and to form a non-symmetric opening.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of actuating the hinge lock mechanism to separate the first plate from the second plate and to form a symmetric opening.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of actuating the hinge lock mechanism to separate the first plate from the second plate at various anterior-posterior angles.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of rotating the locking knob in a first direction to lock the first plate and the second plate and allow a vertical opening.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising the step of rotating the locking knob in second direction which is different from the first direction to unlock the first plate and the second plate and allow a non-symmetrical anterior-to-posterior sloped opening.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first direction is a clockwise direction and the second direction is a counterclockwise direction.
